Overview

This guided snorkelling tour takes you by boat from Santa Maria to the best reef of the day, near Farol at the southern tip of Sal or in the Bay of Santa Maria. It is a shared group activity lasting about two hours, suited to beginners and confident snorkellers aged 8 and over who can swim.

Full Description

The Bay of Santa Maria

The Bay of Santa Maria curves along the south coast of Sal in front of the town's long white beach. Sheltered from the strong northeast trade winds that sweep the island, it usually has calm water and good visibility, which makes it one of the best places for snorkelling in Cape Verde. Under the surface, sand patches alternate with volcanic rock and reef where fish gather to feed and shelter.

Depending on wind, swell and visibility, your guide picks the spot with the best conditions of the day, so every trip is a little different. On some days a shallow wreck can be seen at the end of the reef, though this cannot be promised. If you are wondering whether snorkeling in Santa Maria is worth it when the beach itself has few fish, this boat trip is the answer: it takes you directly to the living reef that you cannot reach from the shore.

The reef near Farol

Farol is the area around the lighthouse at Ponta do Sinó, the southernmost point of Sal, west of Santa Maria. Here the sea floor drops away over rocky ridges and reef, and the meeting of currents brings plenty of food for fish. It is one of the favourite sites of the local dive centres and a highlight of any Santa Maria reef tour when conditions allow.

The boat stops right above the site, so there is no long swim from the shore. You enter the water from the side of the boat with your guide, float face down and let the reef unfold below you, usually at a depth of a few metres. The guide stays close, points out animals hidden in the rocks and keeps an eye on everyone, so even first-time snorkellers feel at ease.

Marine life of Sal

The waters around Sal mix tropical and Atlantic species. On a typical snorkel you may see stingrays resting on the sand, moray eels peering from cracks, shoals of soldierfish and snappers, colourful parrotfish grazing on the rock and long, thin trumpetfish hovering in the water. Sea turtles feed on these reefs, and from June to October loggerhead turtles come ashore on Sal's beaches to nest.

Your guide explains how to observe without touching, standing on or chasing any animal, which protects both you and the reef. Marine life is wild, so sightings vary from day to day and cannot be guaranteed, but the variety of fish is usually high. A waterproof camera or phone case is a good idea if you want to bring back pictures of your encounters.

The dive centre, briefing and boat ride

The experience starts at the dive centre in Santa Maria, where the team fits you with a mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit, and you complete a short registration form. Before leaving, you receive a safety briefing, the rules for the boat and the reef, and simple snorkelling tips such as clearing your mask and breathing calmly through the tube.

The ride to the site is in a rigid inflatable boat with low sides, fast and stable but wet inside, so leave phones and valuables you do not want splashed with the dive centre or in a dry bag. The water is around 22 degrees in late winter and up to 27 degrees from August to October, and the wetsuit keeps you comfortable. After about two hours you return to the dive centre and are dropped back in Santa Maria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is a shared group activity: you join other snorkellers on the boat with a professional guide. Guides speak several languages and are assigned according to the group.

How long does it take?

About 2 hours from the start at the dive centre, including fitting, the briefing, the boat ride and the snorkelling time.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. Pickup and drop-off are included from hotels and set points in Santa Maria.

What is included?

Pickup and drop-off in Santa Maria, a professional snorkelling guide, a safety briefing with basic instruction, snorkel equipment, a wetsuit, a life jacket and the boat ride to the reef. Towels, food and drinks are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.

Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?

Children aged 8 and over who can swim are welcome. Because you climb in and out of a boat at sea, it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or for non-swimmers.

Do I need snorkelling experience?

No. The guide explains how to use the equipment and stays close to you in the water, and the life jacket helps you float. Experienced snorkellers also enjoy the sites.

Will I see sea turtles?

Turtles are often seen on Sal's reefs, especially in the warmer months, but marine life is wild and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Rays, moray eels and many reef fish are commonly seen.

What should I bring?

Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, sunscreen, drinking water and a waterproof camera if you have one. Leave valuables at your hotel.

What is the best time for snorkelling in Santa Maria?

Calm mornings often give the clearest water. August to October brings the warmest water and lighter winds, while the windier months from December to March can mean more swell.

What happens in bad weather?

Safety comes first. If wind or swell make the reefs unsafe, the guides choose a more sheltered site or the trip is moved. If it cannot run, we contact you on WhatsApp to arrange another time or date.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date and start time in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes, with your pickup details.
