Full Description

The Hato plain, Curaçao's mini desert

From the meeting point the convoy drives a short stretch of public road north towards the airport, then turns onto the Hato plain. This flat limestone plateau, covered in tall columnar cactus, thorny shrubs and pale sandy tracks, is known locally as the mini desert of Curaçao, and it is where the buggies really come into their own.

The tracks are full of holes, dips and bumps, perfect for fun driving at a safe pace behind your guide. In the dry season the dust gets everywhere, and after rain the mud splashes up around your ears, so wear clothes that can get dirty. The guide stops along the way to explain the landscape and its plants, and to make sure everyone in the group is comfortable at the wheel.

Boka Patrick and the north coast

The north coast of Curaçao is a world away from the calm beaches of the south and west. Here the Atlantic trade winds drive big waves straight into a wall of limestone cliffs, carving small inlets called bokas. Boka Patrick is one of them, a dramatic spot where you stop to take photos and enjoy a little free time.

Next comes a lookout point over the Caribbean Sea, nicknamed Curaçao Splash. On windy days the waves crash into hollows in the rock and burst high into the air like a natural fountain show, a thrilling sight and a great photo opportunity. Swimming is not possible on this coast, but the views are among the most powerful on the island. The route also passes a windmill farm, part of the island's clean-energy landscape.

The Bullenbaai coastline

After the north coast, the route swings west to explore the coastline around Bullenbaai, on the leeward side of the island. Here the landscape changes again: rocky headlands, quiet coves and deep blue water, with dry hills of cactus behind them and wide views over the sea towards the horizon.

This stretch is a highlight for many riders, combining off-road driving with scenery that most visitors to Curaçao never see, as it can only be reached by rough tracks. Your guide chooses the best viewpoints for a short stop and photos, and shares stories about this little-visited corner of the island. It is an ideal way to discover hidden spots far from the busy beaches and the city.

Kokomo Beach

To close the adventure, the tour stops for about 25 minutes at Kokomo Beach, a small, calm beach on the south-west coast near Willemstad with soft sand, shady umbrellas and clear water. After the dust and heat of the off-road tracks, the swim is a welcome way to cool down.

Snorkel equipment is provided, so you can look at the fish along the rocky edges of the beach, and you also get a bottle of water and a treat. Bring a change of clothes for after the swim, as the ride back to the meeting point is short. Many travellers looking for the best things to do in Curaçao say this mix of adrenaline and a beach break is the perfect half day.
