Full Description
Museum Island and Berlin Cathedral from the water
The cruise leaves from the Alte Börse pier beside the Friedrichsbrücke, directly opposite the northern end of Museum Island, where the Bode Museum sits on the point like the bow of a ship. As the boat moves east you pass the new entrance building of the island and the colonnades of the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie, and then Berlin Cathedral fills the view: completed in 1905 for the Prussian royal family, with a central dome almost a hundred metres high and the Lustgarten lawn in front of it.
Seen from the Spree, the museum facades and the cathedral form one continuous riverfront that you cannot take in from the streets, which is why a boat tour Museum Island Berlin is the classic first look at the city. The commentary explains the UNESCO listing and the order in which the five museums were built. You pass this stretch twice, on the way out and on the way back.
Humboldt Forum, the Mühlendamm Lock and the Nikolaiviertel
Beyond the cathedral the boat passes the Humboldt Forum, the cultural centre completed in 2020 behind the rebuilt baroque facades of the Berlin City Palace, which was demolished in 1950; the East German Palace of the Republic stood here until 2008. The boat turns in front of the Mühlendamm Lock, the point where Berlin began: a mill dam on the Spree linked the twin medieval towns of Berlin and Cölln in the thirteenth century, and the lock still controls the river level today.
Heading back west you pass the Nikolaiviertel, the oldest quarter of the city, rebuilt in the 1980s around the twin spires of the Nikolaikirche, the oldest church in Berlin, with the 368-metre TV Tower of 1969 rising behind it. This section gives the audio guide its most layered stories, from the medieval harbour to the East German rebuilding, in about ten minutes of sailing.
Friedrichstraße, the Schiffbauerdamm and the Tränenpalast
West of Museum Island the river narrows between the Schiffbauerdamm, once the street of the shipbuilders, and Friedrichstraße station. Here stands the Tränenpalast, the Palace of Tears: the glass border pavilion built in 1962 where visitors from West Berlin said goodbye before passing through the checkpoints back to the West, since the station itself was a crossing point in the divided city. Today it holds a free exhibition on daily life at the border.
The commentary covers the river's role as part of the border, with the Wall running along the far bank, and the bridges that were sealed or watched. From the boat you also see the theatre on the Schiffbauerdamm and the back of the station, a view most visitors never get. This is the midpoint of the Spree river cruise Berlin travellers book most often, just before the Government District opens out.
The Government District: Reichstag, Chancellery and Central Station
As the river bends north the Reichstag appears, completed in 1894, crowned with its glass dome in 1999 and seat of the German parliament. The boat glides through the Band des Bundes, the ribbon of federal buildings built across the river after reunification so that government would straddle the former border: the parliamentary offices, a double footbridge and the Federal Chancellery of 2001 with its circular windows. On the opposite bank rises Berlin Central Station, opened in 2006, the largest multi-level station in Europe, and a new bridge leads to the site of the Chancellery's extension.
This stretch is the reason many people search for a Berlin boat trip Reichstag: the parliament and the Chancellery were built to be seen from the water, and the riverside lawns in front are full of Berliners on warm days. Allow for the best photographs on the return leg, when the light is behind you in the afternoon.
House of World Cultures and the turn through the Tiergarten
The boat turns at the House of World Cultures, the former Congress Hall built in 1957 as an American contribution to the city's international building exhibition; Berliners call it the pregnant oyster because of its curved roof, which collapsed in 1980 and was rebuilt in 1987. It stands at the edge of the Tiergarten, the great park of central Berlin, and from the water you see the park's trees and the carillon tower beside the hall.
From here the boat returns east along the same route, which gives you the second look at every sight and a chance to photograph the Reichstag, the cathedral and Museum Island from the other side. The round trip ends back at the Alte Börse pier after about an hour, a few minutes from Hackescher Markt, Museum Island and the cafés of the Spandauer Vorstadt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
It is a shared sightseeing cruise on a scheduled boat; you sit with other passengers and follow the commentary over the speakers or the audio guide.
How long does the Spree cruise take?
About 1 hour for the full round trip from the Alte Börse pier and back, with every sight passed twice.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. The pier is opposite Museum Island, a three-minute walk from Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station, which is easy to reach from anywhere in Berlin.
What is included?
The 1-hour cruise, commentary in English and German over the speakers, an audio guide in six further languages, partly shaded seating and restrooms on board. Food and drinks are available to buy and are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a youth rate for ages 7 to 14. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.
Is the cruise suitable for children and for people with reduced mobility?
Children enjoy it and an hour is the right length for families. The boat is not step-free, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users; people who can manage a few steps are fine.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, a hat and a camera in summer; a warm layer in spring and autumn, as the open deck is breezy. Your online ticket to exchange at the pier.
What is the best time of day for the cruise?
Late afternoon departures give the softest light on the cathedral and the Reichstag; the earlier departures are quieter. In summer the boats fill up, so book your preferred time in advance.
What happens in bad weather?
The cruise runs in light rain and part of the seating is covered. In severe weather the operator may cancel for safety, in which case we rebook you for another departure or refund you.
Is the Spree cruise worth it if I only have one day in Berlin?
Yes. In one hour you see Museum Island, the cathedral, the Nikolaiviertel, the Reichstag and the Chancellery from the water, which is the quickest overview of the historic centre.
Can I get the audio guide in Arabic?
Not on this boat. English and German are played over the speakers and the handset guide covers Spanish, French, Hebrew, Italian, Polish and Russian.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and departure time in the booking panel and complete the booking; our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your ticket to exchange at the pier.
