Full Description

GeoSea geothermal baths and their seawater

GeoSea opened in 2018 on Húsavíkurhöfði, the headland just north of Húsavík harbour, but the story of the water goes back further. Boreholes were drilled here to find hot water for heating the town; instead they struck geothermally heated seawater, rich in minerals but unsuitable for the heating network. For years local people filled an old cheese vat on the headland with it and used it as an informal hot tub, until the idea grew into today's baths.

The water in the pools is seawater warmed by the heat of the Earth, kept at a comfortable bathing temperature of around 38 to 39°C. Its minerals and salt make it feel soft on the skin, and because it is constantly renewed the pools need far fewer chemicals than an ordinary swimming pool. Many visitors find it gentler than freshwater hot springs.

The infinity pools and the view over Skjálfandi Bay

The baths are built on the edge of the cliff, and the pools seem to flow straight into the sea below. In front of you lies Skjálfandi Bay, with the Kinnarfjöll mountains rising on the far shore and the islands of Lundey and Flatey out in the water. In summer whales sometimes surface in the bay within sight of the pools, and whale-watching boats pass below on their way out.

The best time to visit GeoSea depends on what you want to see. From late May to July the midnight sun means an evening soak in full daylight, with the light turning gold over the mountains. From September to April the long nights bring a chance of seeing the northern lights from the warm water on a clear, dark evening, one of the most magical experiences in north Iceland.

Planning your visit: tickets, time slots and what to bring

When you book GeoSea tickets you choose an entry time on the day, with slots from midday into the evening; the booking panel shows the times available. Opening hours vary by season, so check the last entry time when you plan. Most people stay two to three hours, enough for a long soak, a few photos and a hot drink from the small café on site.

Your ticket includes a locker and soap, shampoo and conditioner in the showers. Bring your own swimwear and towel, or rent them at reception along with a bathrobe. As in all Icelandic pools, you must shower without swimwear before entering the water; this is a strict hygiene rule. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Húsavík headland and the town

GeoSea sits on Vitaslóð, the lighthouse path, next to the small Húsavík lighthouse on the headland. From the car park and the path you have a fine view down to the harbour, the red-roofed wooden church of 1907 and the colourful houses of the town, which is known as the whale-watching capital of Iceland.

How to get to GeoSea is easy: it is about a 10-minute walk or a two-minute drive from the harbour, and there is free parking at the entrance. Húsavík lies about an hour and a quarter by road from Akureyri and around 45 minutes from Lake Mývatn, so a soak in the sea baths fits well at the end of a day on the Diamond Circle route or after a morning whale-watching trip.
