Full Description
Skaftafell visitor area
The tour starts at the glacier tours hut beside the main car park of the Skaftafell visitor area, the busiest gateway to Vatnajökull National Park on the south coast. The visitor centre has a café, toilets, maps and an exhibition on the park, and it is the starting point for well-marked trails through birch woodland, so it is easy to fill the rest of your day after the hike.
Wondering how to get to Skaftafell? It lies on the Ring Road (Route 1) about four to five hours' drive east of Reykjavík and roughly an hour west of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Seasonal long-distance buses stop here, but a rental car gives you far more freedom. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early: parking can be busy in summer, and boots with ankle support can be rented at the hut.
The 4x4 ride and the glacial landscape
From the hut a 4x4 bus drives about 15 to 20 minutes to the edge of Falljökull, crossing a landscape shaped entirely by ice and meltwater. Out of the windows you see the grey gravel of the outwash plains, moraine ridges left by the retreating glacier and the steep slopes of Öræfajökull, the ice-covered volcano that feeds Falljökull from above.
A walk of about 30 minutes then leads over the moraine to the ice. Your guide points out the polished bedrock and the lines that mark how far the glacier reached a few decades ago, which makes its retreat easy to understand. The total walking distance on this tour is around 3 kilometres, on uneven but not steep ground, which is why it is rated easy.
Falljökull glacier and its icefall
Falljökull means 'falling glacier', and from the hiking area you see why: higher up, the glacier tumbles over a steep step in a chaos of seracs and broken ice. Where you hike, the ice is calmer and safe to explore with crampons. You will see deep blue crevasses, ridges sculpted by wind and sun, and channels where meltwater disappears into the glacier.
Your certified guide first teaches you to walk confidently with crampons, then leads the group along a route chosen that morning according to conditions. Expect about 1.5 hours on the ice, with stops for photos and stories about how the glacier forms, moves and changes from season to season. This Falljökull glacier hike suits first-timers who want real ice under their feet without climbing.
Vatnajökull National Park
Vatnajökull National Park covers a large share of Iceland and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019 for the way volcanoes and glaciers interact beneath and around its ice cap. Vatnajökull itself is the largest glacier in Iceland and the most voluminous in Europe, with dozens of outlet glaciers spilling from its edges, Falljökull among them.
Is a Vatnajökull glacier hike worth it? For most visitors it is the most memorable way to experience the park, because you stand on the ice rather than looking at it from a viewpoint. The best time to visit Skaftafell for hiking is from late spring to early autumn for mild weather, while winter offers quieter trails and clearer blue ice.
