Full Description

St Peter's Square in the morning

St Peter's Square was laid out in the seventeenth century as an immense oval embraced by two curving colonnades, each four columns deep, topped by statues of saints. In the centre stands an Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome in AD 37, which watched over the chariot races of an ancient circus close to this spot. Two fountains frame it, and discs set into the paving mark the points where the four rows of columns line up into one.

At 9:00 the square is still relatively quiet, which is the best time to see it before the tour groups and pilgrims arrive. Your guide spends about 15 minutes here explaining how the square was designed to welcome the faithful, where the pope appears for blessings and how the facade of the basilica was built. Then you go through security and enter with priority access.

Inside St Peter's Basilica: masterpieces and scale

Built between 1506 and 1626 over the tomb venerated as that of St Peter, the basilica is the largest church in the world, about 186 metres long inside. Its scale is deceptive: the cherubs holding the holy water basins near the entrance look child-sized from afar but are taller than an adult. Along the nave you see the marble Pietà, carved when its sculptor was in his twenties, the bronze statue of St Peter whose foot has been worn smooth by pilgrims, and the twisting bronze canopy that rises almost 30 metres over the papal altar.

Your guide explains the mosaics that look like oil paintings, the golden window of the Holy Spirit in the apse and the floor markings comparing the length of other great churches. This St Peter's Basilica guided tour spends most of its time here, at an unhurried pace.

The papal crypts and the Vatican Grottoes

Beneath the main floor lie the Vatican Grottoes, the level between today's basilica and the earlier church of the fourth century. Many popes are buried here in marble tombs, some simple and others crowned with carved effigies, and chapels along the way preserve mosaics and sculptures from the older basilica. The grottoes sit just above the ancient cemetery on the Vatican Hill where St Peter is believed to have been buried.

Visiting the papal tombs with a guide gives meaning to what would otherwise be a quiet walk past names and dates: you learn how the basilica grew over almost two thousand years and why this spot became the heart of the Catholic world. The visit is calm and respectful, and you exit the crypts back into the church near the dome entrance.

The St Peter's dome climb and the view over Rome

At the end of the guided part, your guide takes you to the dome entrance with your pre-reserved ticket. The lift carries you to the terrace level, where you can walk inside the base of the dome and look down at the papal altar far below, with the mosaics of the dome close enough to see each tile. From there, 320 steps climb between the dome's inner and outer shells, growing narrower and leaning with the curve as you rise.

The reward is the circular balcony at the top, about 136 metres above the ground, with a view over St Peter's Square, the Vatican Gardens and the domes and rooftops of Rome as far as the hills. Allow about 45 minutes to an hour for the climb and the descent at your own pace. The steps are not suitable for anyone with heart or mobility problems.

Planning your visit and the Borgo neighbourhood

St Peter's Basilica opens early in the morning and is free to enter, but the security queue can be long by mid-morning, which is why the 9:00 start and priority access matter. On Wednesday mornings, when the pope holds the general audience, and on major religious holidays, access can change at short notice; we let you know if timings move. Strict dress rules apply: shoulders and knees must be covered.

The best time to visit St Peter's is early in the day in any season, and from November to February the queues are shortest. After the tour, walk down Via della Conciliazione to Castel Sant'Angelo and the Tiber in about 10 minutes, or explore the narrow streets of the Borgo, the old neighbourhood between the Vatican and the river.
