Overview
This shared day tour takes you from Taormina to the summit area of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. A coach drives you to the north side of the volcano above Linguaglossa, through pine forests and old lava flows, to a mountain refuge at about 1,800 metres where you can buy food and rent boots or jackets. From there, off-road 4x4 vehicles climb to the authorised upper crater zone at about 2,900 metres, where licensed Alpine guides lead a walk across slopes of ash and volcanic rock and show you the summit craters from a safe distance. A tour leader accompanies you all day. It suits travellers in reasonable health who want to go higher than the usual Etna excursions; warm clothes and sturdy shoes are essential.

Full Description
Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano
Mount Etna dominates eastern Sicily. Its summit stands at well over 3,300 metres, its height changing with each eruption, and it is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The summit area is made of several large craters, and the flanks are dotted with more than three hundred vents, from small holes to large cones, many of them the result of eruptions that you can trace across the landscape.
Its smoking peak is visible from almost everywhere in Sicily, including from the terraces of Taormina, which is why so many travellers look for an Etna tour from Taormina. This tour goes higher than most standard excursions, which usually stop around the mountain stations; here you continue by 4x4 to the authorised summit zone, conditions permitting.
The north side and Linguaglossa
The coach leaves Taormina and takes about an hour and a half to reach the north side of Etna. The route climbs through the vineyards and hazelnut orchards of the lower slopes to Linguaglossa, a mountain town known for its stone churches and as the gateway to the northern side of the volcano. Above the town, the road crosses forests of tall pines that grow on old lava, a striking contrast of green trees and black rock.
The north side is quieter and greener than the south, and it gives a different view of the volcano, with long lava flows that reached the forest in recent decades. If you are planning an Etna day trip from Taormina, the northern approach is also the closest, which leaves more time on the mountain.
The mountain refuge at about 1,800 metres
The coach stops at a mountain refuge at about 1,800 metres, the base for the ascent. Here the vegetation thins out, the air turns cooler and the landscape opens onto wide fields of dark volcanic sand. There is time to use the facilities, buy food and drinks, and rent boots and jackets if you did not bring suitable clothing.
This is also where you meet the 4x4 vehicles and the licensed Alpine guides, who take over for the high-altitude part of the tour. The guides speak Italian and English and give the safety instructions before departure. Even on a hot day at the coast, temperatures here can be ten or fifteen degrees lower, so dressing in layers is the key to enjoying the day.
The 4x4 ascent and the upper crater zone
From the refuge, off-road vehicles climb a rough track across ash slopes and lava fields to the authorised upper crater zone at about 2,900 metres. The views widen at every bend: the Ionian coast, the Nebrodi mountains and, on clear days, the Aeolian Islands. The ride itself is an adventure, bumping over volcanic gravel in a landscape that feels almost lunar.
At the top, the Alpine guides lead a walk over slopes of ash and volcanic rock and stop at a safety zone to observe the summit craters and any activity, according to the weather and the state of the volcano. You see steaming fumaroles, coloured mineral deposits and fresh lava formations. The guides decide how far it is safe to go on the day.
Practical tips for the Etna summit
The summit area is high mountain terrain, and the weather can change quickly. Bring warm clothing, a windproof jacket and sports shoes with a good grip; sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. Sunglasses and sun cream are useful even on cool days, because the sun is strong at altitude. Boot and jacket rental is available at the refuge for those who need it.
The tour is not suitable for pregnant women, people with heart problems or babies under one year. The walk at the top is not long, but the altitude makes it more tiring than it looks. The best time to visit Etna's upper craters is from late spring to autumn, when the track is free of snow; the guides adapt the programme to the conditions on each day.
