Full Description
An artisan glass workshop in Cannaregio
The lesson takes place in a small artisan workshop in Campiello Widmann, also called Campiello Biri, a quiet square in the Cannaregio district close to the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and a short walk from the Rialto Bridge. Here the master works every day, surrounded by shelves of glass objects, coloured rods and the tools of his craft.
Because the class is private, the workshop is yours for the duration of the lesson, and the master adapts the pace to you. It is one of the most personal things to do in Venice: instead of watching from behind a crowd in a showroom, you sit at the workbench yourself. The lesson can also be given in Italian, Spanish or French if you ask when booking.
The tradition of Venetian glass
Glass has been made in the Venetian lagoon for more than a thousand years. In 1291 the Republic ordered the furnaces to move to the island of Murano, partly to protect the city from fire and partly to keep the secrets of the glassmakers under control. Venetian glass soon became famous across Europe for its clear crystal, its colours and its virtuoso forms.
Today the name Murano glass is known worldwide as a synonym of beauty, and the techniques are still handed down from master to apprentice. During the lesson the artisan shares the history of this art and some of its secrets, so you understand what makes real Venetian glass different from the imitations sold in souvenir shops.
Working glass over the flame
The technique you learn is lampworking, which Venetians call lavorazione a lume: instead of a large furnace, the artisan uses a torch flame to melt thin rods of coloured glass, then shapes the soft glass with simple tools while turning it continuously. It is the method behind the famous Venetian glass beads and many small sculptures and figurines.
First the master shows you the process from start to finish, explaining how heat, colour and movement work together. Seeing a glowing rod turn into a delicate form in a few minutes is fascinating in itself, and it prepares you for your own turn at the flame. If you are looking for a Venice glass making class rather than a simple demonstration, this is it.
Creating your own piece
Then it is your turn. With the master beside you, guiding your hands step by step, you melt and shape the glass to make your personal, one-of-a-kind object. No previous experience is needed: the artisan chooses a piece suited to a beginner and makes sure every participant succeeds, while keeping safety around the flame his priority.
At the end of the lesson you take your creation away with you, a souvenir with far more meaning than anything bought in a shop because you made it yourself in Venice. Many couples and friends book this private workshop as a special memory of their trip, and it combines easily with a walk through Cannaregio afterwards.
