Full Description
Kuang Si Waterfalls, the jewel of Luang Prabang
The Kuang Si Waterfalls lie in the forested hills about 30 kilometres south of Luang Prabang, a drive of around 50 minutes. The river tumbles over a series of limestone terraces, ending in the main fall, a white curtain of water roughly 60 metres high. Minerals dissolved in the water settle as travertine, which shapes the natural dams between the pools and gives them their famous milky turquoise colour.
Is Kuang Si worth visiting? It is the most popular natural sight in northern Laos, and a Kuang Si Waterfalls tour in the afternoon lets you enjoy it after the morning crowds have thinned. Paths and wooden bridges lead from the lower pools to the foot of the main cascade, and a steeper trail climbs to the top of the falls for views over the forest. You have about two hours here, so you can swim, walk and simply sit by the water.
Swimming in the turquoise pools
Several of the lower pools are open for swimming, with clear signs showing where you may enter the water. The water is cool and refreshing all year, especially welcome on hot afternoons, and some pools have small natural slides and rope swings. Changing cabins stand near the main swimming areas, so bring swimwear, a towel and a dry bag for your phone.
Swimming is not allowed directly below the main waterfall, and some upper pools are protected areas, so follow the signs and your guide's advice. The best time to visit Kuang Si for colour is the dry season, from about November to May, when the water is at its most turquoise. During the rainy months from June to October the falls are more powerful and dramatic, though the pools can turn cloudy and some swimming areas may close after heavy rain.
Asiatic black bear rescue centre and forest trails
Near the entrance to the falls, a rescue centre cares for Asiatic black bears, also called moon bears for the pale crescent on their chests, along with a few sun bears. Most were rescued from illegal trade, and they now live in spacious forest enclosures with platforms, hammocks and pools. Information boards explain their story and the work to protect wild bears in Laos.
From the bear enclosures, shaded trails wind uphill through the forest beside the cascades. The walk to the main fall is short and gentle, while the path to the top is steep and can be muddy, so good shoes help. Insect repellent is useful in the trees. With two hours of free time you can see the bears, take photos at the main fall and still enjoy a long swim before the group continues.
Kuang Si heritage rice farm
After the falls, the tour follows the water downstream to a heritage rice farm, where the stream from Kuang Si irrigates terraced paddies. Here you see how rice, the heart of Lao life, is grown by hand: the nursery beds, the transplanting of young shoots, the water channels and the buffalo that once ploughed the fields. Depending on the season the terraces are bright green, golden or freshly flooded.
The visit also includes a glass of fresh sugarcane juice, pressed in the traditional way, and is a calm, easy stop that shows the link between the forest, the water and the villages. It is a good moment for photographs of the landscape in the soft late-afternoon light, before the short drive of about ten minutes to the riverbank for the cruise.
Sunset cruise on the Mekong
The day ends on the Mekong, the great river that has shaped Laos for centuries. You board a narrow wooden long-tail boat and glide back towards Luang Prabang as the sun sinks behind the hills, lighting the water in shades of gold and pink. Along the banks you may see fishermen, children swimming and villagers tending riverside gardens.
One drink is included on board, and the cruise reaches town around 18:30, in time for dinner or a stroll through the night market. A Mekong sunset cruise is one of the classic things to do in Luang Prabang, and combining it with Kuang Si means you see both the forest and the river in one afternoon, without having to organise any transport yourself.
