Overview
This is a 50-minute shared canal cruise through the old city of Haarlem, the elegant capital of North Holland just 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam. You board on the river Spaarne, across the water from Teylers Museum, and the local skipper steers a comfortable boat past the tall windmill De Adriaan, along the stately Nieuwe Gracht, by the city theatre and towards the Frans Hals Museum, telling stories about the city in Dutch, English or German. An audio guide is also available in five languages. In summer the panorama roof opens to the sun, on cold days the covered boats are heated, and the open rear deck is perfect for photos. It suits families, couples and first-time visitors. There is no hotel pickup.

Full Description
The river Spaarne and Teylers Museum
The cruise starts on the Spaarne, the river that winds through the heart of Haarlem and made the city a busy trading port in the Middle Ages. Boarding is right across the water from Teylers Museum, which opened in 1784 and is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. Its grand classical facade on the riverbank hides the famous Oval Room, fossils, scientific instruments and an important collection of drawings.
From the boat you get the best view of the museum and of the merchant houses that line the Spaarne, with their gables and old warehouse doors. The skipper explains how Haarlem grew rich on cloth, trade and shipbuilding, and why this river was so important for the city. At the boarding point there is a terrace overlooking the water where snacks can be bought before the cruise.
Windmill De Adriaan
Following the Spaarne, the boat passes Molen De Adriaan, the tall windmill that has become a symbol of Haarlem. The first mill was built here in 1779 on the foundations of an old defensive tower of the city wall. It burned down in 1932, and after decades without it the people of Haarlem raised funds to rebuild it; the new mill opened in 2002 and its sails turn again above the river.
Seen from the water, the mill rises high above the houses on its brick base, which gives it plenty of wind in the middle of the city. It is one of the favourite photo moments of the Haarlem canal cruise, especially from the open rear deck. The mill can be visited separately on land if you want to climb its gallery.
The Nieuwe Gracht and the city theatre
The route turns into the Nieuwe Gracht, the New Canal dug in the seventeenth century when Haarlem expanded. Wealthy families built tall, stately canal houses here with large windows, elegant cornices and grand front doors, and the trees along both quays make it one of the most beautiful canals of the city.
The boat also passes the Stadsschouwburg, the city theatre, and quieter stretches of water that are hard to see on foot. Along the way the skipper points out hidden corners and shares stories about everyday life in Haarlem past and present, with humour that keeps children and adults listening. The route through these calmer canals is one of the reasons the cruise feels so relaxed compared with busier city waterways.
Frans Hals Museum and the southern canals
Towards the end of the cruise the boat approaches the area of the Frans Hals Museum, housed in a seventeenth-century almshouse for elderly men built around a peaceful courtyard garden. The museum is famous for its Dutch Golden Age portraits and group paintings, and it is one of the reasons many travellers choose Haarlem for a day trip from Amsterdam.
Haarlem is only about 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station, and the old city is compact and easy to explore on foot. Combining this canal cruise with a visit to the museums and the Grote Markt makes a perfect day out, quieter and more relaxed than the canals of the capital.
