Sea Life Scheveningen Aquarium

The aquarium stands right on the boulevard of Scheveningen, The Hague's seaside district, a few steps from the beach and the Pier. Its route takes you from the familiar waters of the Netherlands and the North Sea to the mysterious depths of tropical oceans, with themed zones, touch-free viewing windows and interactive features that explain how marine animals live. Recent renovations added new displays and a more immersive experience.

The Underwater Tunnel

The highlight for most visitors is the underwater tunnel. You walk through a transparent passage surrounded by 180,000 litres of water while sharks, rays and shoals of fish swim above and beside you. Light ripples across the walls and the feeling is as close as you can get to walking on the sea floor without getting wet.

Take your time here: the animals move constantly and each minute brings a new view. Children love spotting the rays as they glide right over their heads. Photography without flash is usually welcome, and the tunnel is fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Visit early in your slot or toward the end of the day if you want the tunnel at its quietest.

Penguins, Otters and Seahorses

Beyond the tunnel you meet some of the aquarium's most loved residents. Penguins waddle across their rocks and dive into their pool, otters play and swim in their enclosure, and in quieter tanks seahorses cling to seagrass with their curled tails. Graceful rays and colourful reef fish complete the picture of marine biodiversity, and information panels explain where each species lives in the wild and the threats it faces.

Daily feeding sessions are a great moment to see the animals active and to hear the staff explain how they are cared for and what visitors can do to protect the oceans. Feeding times are shown at the entrance; plan your route around one or two of them for the best experience.

The Night-Reef Experience and Scheveningen Boulevard

The newest exhibit lets you experience how a coral reef transforms from day to night. Using light, sound and modern technology, it shows how reef animals change their behaviour as darkness falls, a calm and immersive space that adults appreciate as much as children. A virtual reality experience is also available, with tickets sold on site.

After your visit, the car-free Scheveningen boulevard invites a walk along the beach and the Pier. How to get to Sea Life Scheveningen: trams from The Hague Central Station and the city centre reach the boulevard in about 20 to 25 minutes. Present your ticket at the aquarium entrance at your chosen time, and keep a little time afterwards for the sea air and the view along the coast.
