Full Description
Algar Seco and Boneca Cave in Carvoeiro
The first stop, about 50 minutes west of Faro, is Algar Seco on the edge of the fishing village of Carvoeiro. Here the golden limestone of the Algarve has been sculpted by waves and rain into a maze of ledges, arches, blowholes and natural pools. A wooden boardwalk and stone steps lead down from the clifftop, and your guide shows you the paths through the rocks during around an hour on site.
The highlight is Boneca Cave, often called the Doll's Cave, a small grotto with two openings that frame the deep blue Atlantic like windows. It is one of the classic photo spots of the region, especially in the soft morning or late afternoon light. On calm days you can watch boats passing below and see the clear water swirling into the rock pools, a perfect introduction to this stretch of coast.
Benagil Cave from above
Benagil Cave is the most famous sea cave in Portugal: a vast dome carved into the cliff, with a circular hole in its roof that lets sunlight fall onto a small sandy beach inside. New regulations now protect the interior, so kayaks, paddleboards and swimmers are no longer allowed inside and landing on its beach is forbidden. Seeing the Benagil Cave from above is a wonderful alternative that most visitors miss.
From the village of Benagil, a short path along the clifftop leads to a fenced viewpoint directly above the roof opening. Looking down, you see the light pouring through the 'eye' of the cave onto the sand and sea far below, with the ocean glittering beyond the arches. You spend around 30 minutes here, with time for photos and the guide's stories about how the cave formed over thousands of years of erosion.
Praia da Marinha, a jewel of the Algarve coast
A short drive east brings you to Praia da Marinha, regularly named among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. A stairway leads down from the clifftop to a cove of golden sand framed by sculpted cliffs, sea stacks and a natural rock arch, with water so clear you can see fish over the rocks. It is the longest stop of the tour, around an hour and a half.
Use the time to swim, snorkel along the rocks, relax on the sand or enjoy the picnic you bring along, since food is not included. Wetsuits and sandals are available on request, and the shared waterproof bag keeps phones safe. Is Praia da Marinha worth visiting? Without doubt: the view from the top of the steps alone is one of the great sights of southern Portugal.
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail
Praia da Marinha is one end of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, a clifftop path of about 6 kilometres that runs east past Benagil towards Vale Centianes. Its name comes from the small dry valleys that end abruptly at the cliff edge, hanging above the sea. Along the way you pass sinkholes, arches and lookouts over hidden coves reachable only by water.
During the Marinha stop you can walk a section of this Seven Hanging Valleys trail with your guide's tips, choosing between the beach and the views. The path is mostly flat but unfenced in places, so stay well back from the edge. Early morning and late afternoon bring the best light, which is why our two departure times, 10:00 and 15:30, both suit photographers.
Faro and planning your Algarve coast day trip
Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is the arrival point for most visitors to the region thanks to its airport, yet the famous cliffs lie further west. This Algarve coast day trip from Faro solves the question of how to get to Benagil without a car: a direct minibus takes you to three highlights and back in about 5 hours, leaving the rest of the day free for Faro's walled old town and marina.
The best time to visit Benagil and Marinha is from May to October, when the sea is warm enough for swimming; June and September combine warm water with fewer crowds. In winter the light is beautiful and the beaches quiet, though swimming is only for the brave. The tour runs rain or shine, so bring a light jacket in the cooler months.
