Full Description
Schwedenplatz and the Danube Canal
The cruise starts at the boat station on Schwedenplatz, on the edge of the old town, a few minutes on foot from St. Stephen's Cathedral. From here the boat follows the Danube Canal, the narrow arm of the river that runs right past the historic centre and separates it from the Leopoldstadt district. Its stone embankments are lined with trees, cycle paths and summer terraces, and its walls are known for colourful street art.
From the water you see a different Vienna: the modern and historic buildings along the quay, the domed Urania observatory where the Wien river flows into the canal, and the bridges that link the old town with the districts across the canal. A Danube Canal cruise is one of the most relaxing ways to see the city, and on this trip it is only the beginning.
Through the river locks
A special part of the round trip is the passage through two river locks, where the difference in water level between the canal and the main river is balanced. The boat slowly enters the lock chamber, the huge gates close behind it, and the water rises or falls until the gates ahead can open.
Each lock takes about 20 minutes, a fascinating sight for children and adults alike, and a moment to step out on deck and watch the engineering at work. The locks are part of the system that keeps the Danube navigable through Vienna and protects the city from floods. Please note that lock works can occasionally cause delays or a change of route on the afternoon departure.
The great Danube and its skyline
Out on the main Danube the river opens up wide. You glide past Danube Island, the long green island built for flood protection and now a favourite recreation area, and see the modern skyline of the Danube City with its high-rise towers and the slender Danube Tower, Vienna's tallest structure, with its observation deck.
This is the Vienna that many visitors never see from the old town: the big river, the bridges like the Reichsbrücke and the city's newer districts on the north bank. On a sunny day the outdoor deck is the best place to be, and in cooler weather you watch the views through the large windows of the heated or air-conditioned salon.
Wiener schnitzel on board
The Wiener schnitzel is Austria's most famous dish: a thin cutlet, beaten flat, coated in flour, egg and breadcrumbs and fried until golden and puffy. On this cruise it is prepared fresh in the galley with chicken and served with potato salad and lingonberries, the classic Viennese way, often with a wedge of lemon.
The meal is included for adults and children aged 10 to 15; children up to 9 years travel at no charge but without a meal. Drinks are not included and can be ordered on board, together with coffee and typical Austrian pastries if you want something sweet. Many guests say this is the best way to try a schnitzel in Vienna while sightseeing at the same time.
