Full Description

Blagaj Tekke and the Buna spring

Blagaj is the first stop and many travellers say it is the highlight of a Blagaj day trip from Mostar. The Dervish Tekke is a monastery-house of the Sufi order, built in the sixteenth century at the foot of a sheer cliff right beside the emerald source of the Buna River, one of the largest karst springs in Europe. Our guide takes you inside to explain the rooms, the rituals of the dervishes and the legends of the cave behind the spring.

You have about an hour and a half here, enough for the guided visit, a walk along the water and photos from the bridge and riverbank. Entrance to the tekke is optional and paid separately, and opening hours change by season. Visitors should dress modestly, and shoes are removed inside.

Zitomislici Monastery

The second stop is the Orthodox Monastery of Zitomislici, a short drive from Blagaj, on the plain of the Neretva. Founded in the sixteenth century, it was damaged in the twentieth century and carefully rebuilt, and today it is a peaceful complex with a church painted with colourful frescoes, a bell tower and a garden.

Spending about forty-five minutes here shows another side of the region. Your guide explains how Muslim, Catholic and Orthodox communities have lived side by side in Herzegovina for centuries, and visitors can often meet the monks. Dress respectfully with covered shoulders and knees, and note that visiting hours at the monastery vary during the year.

Pocitelj, the medieval stone town

Pocitelj is one of the best-preserved historic towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a day trip to Pocitelj is a favourite with photographers. Terraced stone houses climb a steep slope above the Neretva River toward a hilltop fortress, with the sixteenth-century Hadzi Alija Mosque, a clock tower and a small madrasa tucked among the lanes.

Your guide brings the story of the Ottoman period to life, and then you have free time of about an hour to climb the steps to the viewpoints and fort for sweeping views over the valley. Wear shoes with grip, because the cobbles are steep and worn, and bring water in summer, when the stone holds the heat.

Kravica Waterfalls

The finale is Kravica Waterfalls on the Trebizat River, a wide semicircle of travertine cascades that drop into a clear green pool. It is the most famous natural sight in the region, and our full-day tour includes two hours here, so you can swim, walk the shore and take photos. Is Kravica Waterfall worth visiting? On a warm day, absolutely.

The best time to visit Kravica Waterfalls is late spring to early autumn, when swimming is pleasant. In low season and on colder days the stop may be shorter, a decision made by the guide together with the group. Entrance to the waterfall area is paid separately, and there are places to eat and drink nearby. After the falls, the drive back to Mostar takes under an hour, and you arrive no later than late afternoon.
