Full Description

Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock

Old Town Square has been the market and meeting place of Prague since the twelfth century, and your guide starts here with the overview you need: the Gothic Týn Church with its twin spires, the baroque St. Nicholas Church, the pastel merchant houses and the Old Town Hall. On the hall's south wall is the Astronomical Clock, installed in 1410 and still running, with its astronomical dial, calendar plate and the hourly procession of the apostles.

The guide explains how to read the clock's dials, tells the legends attached to it and points out details most visitors miss, such as the figure of Death ringing his bell. An Astronomical Clock tour with a guide saves you from guessing what the symbols mean, and the square is the best place to understand how the Old Town grew around its church towers before you walk toward the river.

Charles Bridge and its statues

From the square the route follows the old Royal Way through narrow lanes to the Old Town Bridge Tower and onto Charles Bridge. The bridge was founded in 1357 under Charles IV, the king it is named after, and for centuries it was the only crossing of the Vltava in Prague. Its stone arches carry rows of baroque statues added from the end of the seventeenth century, and your guide stops at several of them to explain who they show and why people rub the plaques for luck.

Walking across takes about twenty minutes with the stops. On the way you see Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral rising above the Lesser Town, the mills and islands on the river and the Lesser Town bridge towers at the far end. A Charles Bridge walking tour early in the day is also the best way to see the bridge before the biggest crowds arrive.

Tram ride and Hradčany Square

Instead of climbing the long stairs to the castle, the group boards a city tram for about fifteen minutes; the ticket is included in the tour. The tram winds up through the Lesser Town, and the ride itself gives views of the castle gardens and the roofs below. You get off in the Castle District, Hradčany, the small historic town that grew beside the castle gates.

Hradčany Square is the photo stop: the Archbishop's Palace, the sgraffito-covered Schwarzenberg Palace, the Sternberg Palace and, at the end of the square, the main gate of Prague Castle with its guards. From the terrace on the south side of the square there is an open view over the Lesser Town, Charles Bridge and the Old Town towers, which is why many visitors call it the best viewpoint in Prague.

Prague Castle courtyards

Prague Castle has been the seat of Bohemian rulers since the ninth century and is today the office of the Czech president. Your guide leads you through the castle gates and across the courtyards, past the Matthias Gate and up to the facade of St. Vitus Cathedral, the Gothic cathedral begun in 1344 whose spires you have been seeing from across the river all morning.

The tour covers the exteriors and the courtyards, with the final stories of Prague told in front of the cathedral and views of the city from the castle terraces. Interior tickets for the cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane are not included, which gives you freedom: after the tour ends here at about 13:00 you can buy a castle circuit ticket and explore the interiors at your own pace, or walk down through the castle gardens.

The Old Town lanes and the Royal Way

Between the square and the bridge the group follows the Royal Way, the coronation route that Bohemian kings walked from the Old Town to the castle. It passes the Little Square with its painted house fronts and the Clementinum, the former Jesuit college that now holds the National Library, before reaching the bridge tower.

These lanes are where the guide's legends come alive: houses marked with signs instead of numbers, hidden courtyards and the stories of the merchants and craftsmen who lived here. Comfortable shoes matter on the cobbles, and the lanes are narrow, which is why the tour is not suited to strollers or wheelchairs. The whole Old Town section takes roughly an hour before you cross the river.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is a shared guided walking tour with a live English-speaking guide. If you prefer a private guide for your family or group, tell us on WhatsApp and we will arrange one.

How long does the tour take?

About three hours, from 09:50 at the office to roughly 13:00 at Prague Castle, including the tram ride and the photo stops.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The meeting point at Maiselova 5 is in the centre of the Old Town, close to the Staroměstská metro station.

What is included?

The licensed English-speaking guide, the guided walk through Old Town Square, across Charles Bridge and through the castle courtyards, and one tram ticket up to the Castle District. Interior admissions, food and drinks are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

The tour is priced per person with adult and child categories. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option.

Do we go inside Prague Castle?

You enter the castle complex and walk through its courtyards to the facade of St. Vitus Cathedral. Entry inside the cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane requires a separate castle ticket, which you can buy on the spot after the tour.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes for children who can walk about four kilometres on cobbles; child tickets cover ages 5 to 15. Strollers are not suited to the route.

Is it suitable for reduced mobility?

No. The route has cobblestones, steps and narrow lanes, and the castle courtyards involve some climbing, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes, water, a camera, an umbrella on rainy days and a warm layer in winter. Bring a small bag only, as it will be checked at the castle gates.

What is the best time to visit Prague Castle?

Late morning, exactly when this tour arrives: the morning light is good for photos on Hradčany Square and the hourly changing of the guard at the main gate is easy to catch. Spring and autumn offer mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August.

Is the Astronomical Clock worth seeing?

Yes, and seeing it with a guide makes the difference: the dials, the calendar and the hourly procession of apostles make sense once someone explains them, and the square around it is the heart of the Old Town.

How do I book and confirm?

Select your date in the booking panel and send the request; our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the meeting details for Maiselova 5.
