Overview

This two-hour Vltava River sightseeing cruise is the long version of the Prague boat trip: instead of a short loop below Charles Bridge, the boat heads upstream past the Old Town and Lesser Town embankments, passes through the historic Smíchov water lock and continues south to the Vyšehrad rock with its fortress and basilica before returning to the Old Town. You board a shared sightseeing boat at pier 3A on the Old Town embankment near the Čech Bridge with your QR code, so there is no ticket line. Open-deck seating gives clear views of Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Kampa Island and the Dancing House; an online audio commentary, a paper map and an English booklet replace a live guide. Departures at 12:00 and 15:00; no hotel pickup is included.

Full Description

Pier 3A and the Old Town embankment

The cruise begins at pier 3A on the Old Town embankment, the riverside walk below the Jewish Quarter near the Čech Bridge, a few minutes on foot from the Staroměstská metro station and ten minutes from Old Town Square. Screens at the pier show your boat's name and departure pier; you walk to it, have your QR code scanned at the gangway and choose your seat on the open deck or inside.

Setting off upstream, the boat passes the Rudolfinum concert hall and the Mánes Bridge with the towers of the Old Town behind and the castle hill ahead. The audio commentary runs on your phone through the on-board Wi-Fi, and the paper map and booklet help you follow each bridge and landmark as it appears, which is why this Prague cruise with audio commentary works well for independent travellers.

Charles Bridge and the Lesser Town riverside

Charles Bridge, founded in 1357, is the first great sight: the boat passes under its stone arches with the Old Town Bridge Tower on one side and the Lesser Town towers on the other, and Prague Castle with St. Vitus Cathedral filling the skyline above. From the water you see the statues in silhouette along the parapet and the mill houses of Kampa Island with the Čertovka channel beside the bridge.

Beyond the bridge the Lesser Town riverside opens up: the gardens of Kampa, the Střelecký Island in midstream and the Legion Bridge with its stone lions. The castle stays in view for a long stretch, giving the best Prague Castle from the river photographs of the whole trip; the open deck on the right-hand side facing upstream has the clearest angle.

The Smíchov water lock

Prague's river is stepped by weirs, and boats move between the levels through lock chambers. The Smíchov lock, built between 1911 and 1922 on the Lesser Town side beside the Children's Island, is the chamber this cruise uses: the gates close behind the boat, water floods the chamber and the boat rises to the upper river in a few minutes, something most visitors have never experienced in the middle of a historic capital.

The lock has limited capacity and the Vltava carries regular traffic, so the route through the lock is subject to river conditions and cannot be guaranteed; the cruise duration stays the same either way. When the passage happens it is a highlight for children, who watch the walls of the chamber slide past from the open deck.

The New Town embankment and the Dancing House

Above the lock the river widens along the New Town embankment, the long promenade of Art Nouveau apartment houses that locals use for weekend markets and evening walks. The boat passes the Jirásek Bridge and the Dancing House, the curved glass-and-concrete building from 1996 that has become the symbol of modern Prague, then the Palacký Bridge with its sculpture groups at each end.

This stretch is calm and open, a good moment to use the snacks sold on board or simply watch the embankment slide by. The commentary explains how the river was tamed with embankments and weirs in the nineteenth century, and how the islands and the old water mills shaped the districts of Smíchov and Podskalí on either bank.

Vyšehrad rock and fortress

The turning point of the cruise is the Vyšehrad rock, a cliff rising straight from the water on the right bank, crowned by the baroque fortress walls and the twin neo-Gothic spires of the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul. Legend places the first Bohemian princes here, and the rotunda of St. Martin inside the walls dates from the eleventh century. Just before the rock the boat passes under the steel railway bridge of 1901, one of the most photographed industrial landmarks in Prague.

The view of Vyšehrad from the river is one you cannot get on foot, and it is the reason people search for a Vyšehrad river cruise rather than the shorter central loops. From here the boat turns and retraces the route downstream, through the lock again and back past Charles Bridge to pier 3A, arriving about two hours after departure.
