Full Description
Sète and the Canal Royal
Sète was founded in 1666 as the Mediterranean outlet of the Canal du Midi, the great waterway linking the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and its canals still cut through the centre of town. Locals call it the singular island, because the town sits on a narrow strip of land between the sea and the Thau Lagoon. Pastel façades, colourful fishing boats and lively quays line the Canal Royal, where the tour begins.
In summer the Canal Royal is the stage for the water jousts, a tradition in which rowing boats charge each other while jousters on raised platforms try to knock their rivals into the water. Things to do in Sète include walking the quays and trying the tielle, a local octopus pie.
The old harbour and the Mediterranean
From the canals the boat heads out to the old harbour and the open Mediterranean. Sète is one of the main fishing ports on the French Mediterranean coast, and you pass trawlers and small boats tied along the quays, as well as the long stone breakwater with its lighthouse guarding the harbour entrance.
Behind the port rises Mont Saint-Clair, the green hill that dominates the town and offers one of the best viewpoints on the coast. From the water you see how the town climbs its slopes, with the sea on one side and the lagoon on the other. The fishermen explain how the port works and how the catch reaches the fish auction on the quay.
The Thau Lagoon
The Thau Lagoon is the largest lagoon in the Languedoc region, a vast body of calm, salty water separated from the sea by a narrow sandy strip. It is famous for its shellfish farms: long rows of wooden tables stand in the water, from which ropes of oysters and mussels hang to grow. The villages around its shores have lived from this work for generations.
On this boat tour you glide into the lagoon and see the farms up close while the fishermen describe how oysters are raised and harvested. The best time to visit the Thau Lagoon is late afternoon, when the water turns silver and the hills of the far shore glow in the evening light.
The electric boat and the fishermen's commentary
The tour runs on a fully electric boat that moves without engine noise or fumes, so you can hear the water and the commentary clearly. The boat is designed to be accessible to everyone, including passengers in wheelchairs, and the seats are comfortable for the 50-minute trip.
What makes this Sète boat tour different is the crew: local fishermen who grew up on these waters and share stories of the port, the canals and the lagoon. Commentary is in French, but the views speak for themselves. On fine nights, evening trips let you see the town and its canals lit up, a captivating way to end the day. Ask the crew for their favourite places to eat seafood afterwards: nobody knows the port better.
