Full Description

The Aiguille du Midi cable car

The ascent starts in the centre of Chamonix at about 1,035 m. The first cabin climbs over forest and moraine to Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 m, where hikers and paragliders set off in summer. The second section then rises in a single spectacular span almost straight up the north face to the top station at 3,777 m. The whole ride takes about 20 minutes and the height gain, more than 2,700 m, is one of the greatest of any cable car in the world.

How to get to the Aiguille du Midi: the valley station sits a few minutes on foot from Chamonix town centre, and Chamonix itself is about 1 hour 15 minutes by road from Geneva airport. On this private Aiguille du Midi tour your guide books the time slot, so you skip the ticket queue and ride up at the planned hour.

The summit terraces and the footbridge

At the top, tunnels and walkways carved into the granite link the different viewpoints. A footbridge spans the gap between the two rocky spires, and a lift inside the central peak rises to the highest terrace at 3,842 m. From here Mont Blanc, at about 4,805 m, fills the horizon, and the glaciers of the Vallée Blanche spread out towards Italy.

Your guide reads the landscape for you: which summit is which, how the seracs and crevasses form, why the snow ridge below the station is one of the most photographed routes in the Alps. On a clear day you can see the Matterhorn and the Swiss Alps. Plan about two hours at the summit at a calm pace, as the air here has a third less oxygen than at sea level.

The glass box over the void

The highest terrace holds a glass box that juts out from the rock, with glass walls and a glass floor and about 1,000 m of empty air beneath your feet. It is the photo everyone wants, and with a private guide you can choose the quietest moment to queue for it. It is completely safe, and those who prefer to stay on solid ground enjoy almost the same view from the terrace beside it.

Is the Aiguille du Midi worth visiting? For most visitors it is the single most memorable hour in Chamonix: you stand beside the highest peaks of Western Europe without any climbing. Your guide also points out the mountaineers on the ridge, the small huts and the routes that have made this summit a legend.

High-mountain life and the seasons

Part of the charm of this half day is understanding how life works at altitude: how the station was built in the 1950s, how the glaciers are monitored, and how mountain guides prepare for the routes that start right here. Your guide shares this world from the inside, answering every question from children and adults alike.

The tour runs all year round, with morning and afternoon starts. The best time to visit the Aiguille du Midi is early on a clear morning, when the light is sharp and the cabins are calmer; winter brings deep snow and crisp views, while summer offers the most stable weather. The cable car closes for a few weeks of maintenance in late autumn, and our team suggests another date if your day falls then.

Yes. You choose a morning or afternoon start, and at the summit your guide adapts the visit to your energy, your interests and the weather.

How many people can join?

The tour is for your own party, from a couple to a family or a group of friends. Tell us your numbers when booking and we confirm the arrangement.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet your guide at the cable car station in Chamonix. We can arrange a private transfer from Geneva or your hotel on request.

What is included?

A private mountain guide specialised in the Aiguille du Midi and Mont Blanc, explanations of the peaks, glaciers and high-mountain life, and the cable car time-slot booking. Cable car tickets and meals are extra.

How long is the tour?

About 3.5 hours from meeting your guide to returning to the valley station.
