Full Description
From Geneva to Chamonix through the Arve Valley
How to get to Chamonix from Geneva without renting a car: this day trip leaves from a street beside Geneva's Cornavin railway station at 08:30. The coach crosses into France within minutes and follows the Arve river along the motorway known as the Autoroute Blanche, with the limestone cliffs of the Pre-Alps on both sides and the first glimpses of the snowy Mont Blanc massif ahead.
The drive takes about an hour and a half, and on arrival you receive maps and a briefing on the town, the lifts and the timings for the day. Remember your passport, as the trip crosses from Switzerland into France, and non-European visitors need a visa valid for France.
Aiguille du Midi: the summit at 3,842 m
Most guests start with the Aiguille du Midi cable car, which leaves from the centre of Chamonix and climbs via Plan de l'Aiguille to the top station in about 20 minutes. A lift inside the rock then rises to the highest terrace at 3,842 m. From here Mont Blanc, about 4,805 m high, seems close enough to touch, and the panorama spans the highest peaks of Western Europe and the Bossons glacier below.
If you feel adventurous, step into the glass box hanging over the void with about 1,000 m of air beneath your feet. Temperatures stay below zero at the top even in summer, so bring warm layers. The cable car closes for maintenance from early November to mid-December; during that period an alternative is offered.
The Montenvers rack railway
After coming back down and taking a lunch break in town, walk to the small red train station beside Chamonix railway station. The Montenvers rack railway, running since 1908, climbs about 5 km through larch forest to the Montenvers viewpoint at 1,913 m in around 20 minutes.
The terrace at the top looks straight onto the Mer de Glace and the granite spires of the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses. A small exhibition explains how glaciers form and move, and how the ice here has retreated over the last century. It is a gentler outing than the summit and loved by children. Trains leave regularly through the day, so there is no need to rush.
Mer de Glace and the ice cave
The Mer de Glace, or Sea of Ice, is the longest glacier in France at about 7 km. When it is open, a short gondola and a long staircase lead down from Montenvers to an ice cave carved into the glacier each year, with blue walls and sculpted rooms. Signs along the stairs mark the level of the ice in past years.
The ice cave is not guaranteed, even when the train runs, so treat it as a bonus. Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the train and the visit, and keep an eye on the time so you are back in town for the coach. The best time to visit the Mer de Glace is from late spring to early autumn.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc town
Is Chamonix worth visiting on a day trip? Yes, the town alone has plenty of charm: pedestrian streets lined with mountain shops, the church square, the fast-flowing Arve river and Mont Blanc towering above everything. Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, and its centre is compact and easy to explore between the two excursions.
Lunch is not included. Halal food is limited in Chamonix, though vegetarian and fish dishes are easy to find, and many visitors bring a picnic. The best time to visit Chamonix for this trip is from late spring to early autumn, when both lifts usually run all day; winter brings snowy landscapes but shorter days.
