Full Description

From Chamonix to Courmayeur through the Mont Blanc tunnel

The Skyway departs from Courmayeur in Italy's Aosta Valley, on the southern side of Mont Blanc. How to get to Skyway Monte Bianco from Chamonix: drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel, an 11.6 km road tunnel opened in 1965, and you reach the valley station at Entrèves, just above Courmayeur, in about 20 minutes. The tunnel has a toll, and you cross a border, so carry your passport.

Transport is not included in this ticket. If you are staying in Chamonix or Geneva, our team can arrange a private transfer to the valley station and back, so you can combine the French and Italian sides of Mont Blanc in a single day without driving.

The valley station and the rotating cabins

The Skyway opened in 2015 and quickly became one of the most admired cable cars in the Alps. From the valley station at about 1,300 m, large glass cabins rise over larch forest and rocky slopes, turning slowly through a full circle as they climb. Nobody needs a window seat: the view comes to you.

The journey is made in two sections with a change at the mid-station, and the whole ascent takes well under half an hour. The stations, cabins and terraces are wheelchair accessible, which makes the Skyway one of the most inclusive ways to reach high altitude in the Mont Blanc massif. Children love watching the valley turn slowly beneath them.

Mid-station at 2,173 m

The mid-station sits on a sunny shoulder at 2,173 m. It houses a mountain exhibition and museum that tells the story of the cable cars, the early surveyors and the life of the high valleys, as well as a sun terrace looking straight up at the glaciers. In summer an alpine botanical garden nearby shows the flowers that grow at this altitude.

Many visitors stop here on the way down, when they have already adjusted to the height and want a quiet break in the sun. Food and drinks at the restaurants are not included, and halal food is limited on the mountain and in Courmayeur, so bring snacks and water if this matters to you.

Top station at 3,466 m and the panoramic terrace

The top station stands on a rocky spur at 3,466 m, and its circular terrace offers a 360-degree view of the Mont Blanc massif. Mont Blanc itself, at about 4,805 m, rises just across the glacier, with the sharp tooth of the Dent du Géant and the long ridge of the Grandes Jorasses close by. On clear days the view reaches the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso.

Is the Skyway Monte Bianco worth it? For many visitors it rivals the French side, with fewer crowds and a gentler experience. A glass-walled viewing room can be visited for an extra fee paid on site, and in summer a separate gondola crosses the glaciers towards the Aiguille du Midi. Dress warmly: it is cold at the top in every season.

Courmayeur and the best time to visit

Courmayeur is a lively Italian mountain town with a pedestrian main street, stone houses, a church square and views of Mont Blanc's southern face. It is pleasant to stroll through before or after your ride, with cafés and Italian bakeries along the way. The town sits where two green valleys meet, with the Dora Baltea river running below.

The best time to visit the Skyway Monte Bianco is on a clear morning, when visibility is sharpest and the terraces are quieter; summer brings the most stable weather, and winter gives brilliant snowy views. Strong wind can stop the cable car, so check the forecast and plan your day with a little flexibility.
