Full Description
Geneva to Chamonix with your guide
The day begins at 08:30 near Cornavin station in central Geneva. Within minutes you cross into France and follow the Arve river up the valley on the motorway known as the Autoroute Blanche. Your guide uses the drive to set the scene: how the valley was shaped by glaciers, how Chamonix grew from a farming village into a mountain town, and what to expect at altitude.
The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, which makes this one of the easiest day trips from Geneva into the high Alps. Bring your passport, as you cross from Switzerland into France; visitors from outside Europe need a visa valid for France. On clear mornings the first view of Mont Blanc appears long before you reach the town.
Aiguille du Midi summit
The Aiguille du Midi cable car rises from the centre of Chamonix at about 1,035 m to the top station at 3,777 m in around 20 minutes, with a change at Plan de l'Aiguille. A lift inside the granite then takes you to the highest terrace at 3,842 m. Mont Blanc, at about 4,805 m, stands right in front of you, with the glaciers of the Vallée Blanche spreading towards Italy and the Swiss Alps on the horizon.
Your guide helps the group with the timing and points out the main summits before you explore the terraces and, if you dare, the glass box over the void. It is cold at the top in every season, so dress warmly and move slowly. Children under 3 are not allowed on this cable car.
Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace
In the afternoon the group boards the Montenvers rack railway, which has climbed through the forest above Chamonix since 1908. In about 20 minutes it reaches the Montenvers viewpoint at 1,913 m, where a terrace opens onto the Mer de Glace and the sharp granite spires of the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses.
The Mer de Glace is the longest glacier in France, about 7 km long, and one of the best places in the Alps to understand how glaciers move and retreat. The best time to visit the Mer de Glace is from late spring to early autumn, when the train and the ice cave normally operate all day.
The Mer de Glace ice cave
From the viewpoint a short gondola and a long staircase lead down to the ice cave, carved into the glacier afresh every year. Inside, the walls glow blue and the air is cool and still. Along the stairs, markers show where the surface of the ice stood in past decades, a powerful sight that your guide puts into context.
Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for the train, the viewpoint and the cave, and take the steps back up at your own pace. Comfortable shoes with a good grip are essential. In November the train and the cave close for a few weeks of maintenance, and an alternative is offered during that time.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc town with your guide
Between the excursions your guide shows you the heart of Chamonix: the church square, the pedestrian streets with their mountain shops and the bridges over the Arve, all under the summit of Mont Blanc. Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, and the guide shares how the town became the capital of mountain sports.
Is Chamonix worth visiting in a day from Geneva? With a guide to organise the lifts and timing, absolutely. Lunch is not included; halal food is limited in Chamonix, though vegetarian and fish dishes are easy to find and a picnic works well. The tour returns to Geneva in the early evening. Your guide can suggest where to eat.
