Full Description

The Arve Valley by glass-roof coach

The tour leaves central Geneva at 08:30 and crosses into France within minutes. Through the glass roof of the panoramic coach you watch the landscape change: first the rolling countryside around Geneva, then the limestone walls of the Pre-Alps and finally the glacier-fed Arve Valley, with the snowy Mont Blanc massif rising ahead. Your guide shares the story of the valley as you go.

The drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, making this an easy Chamonix day trip from Geneva without the stress of driving or parking. Bring your passport, as you cross from Switzerland into France; visitors from outside Europe need a visa valid for France. The glass roof is at its best on the way in, when the peaks appear above you.

Aiguille du Midi cable car

When it opened in 1955, the Aiguille du Midi cable car was the highest in the world, and it still delivers one of the most dramatic rides in the Alps. In about 20 minutes it climbs from Chamonix via Plan de l'Aiguille to the top station at 3,777 m, and a lift inside the rock continues to the summit terrace at 3,842 m.

From the top, Mont Blanc, about 4,805 m high, dominates the view, and on clear days you can see deep into France, Switzerland and Italy. The glass box over the void offers an extra thrill. Dress warmly, as it is below zero at the summit in every season, and note that children under 3 are not allowed on this cable car.

Montenvers train and the Mer de Glace

The Montenvers rack railway leaves from beside Chamonix railway station and climbs about 5 km through the forest to the viewpoint at 1,913 m in roughly 20 minutes. The red trains have run since 1908, and the view at the top is one of the classic sights of the Alps: the Mer de Glace, the longest glacier in France at about 7 km, below the granite spires of the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses.

When open, a short gondola and a long staircase lead down to an ice cave carved into the glacier each year. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the train and the glacier. The Mer de Glace closes for maintenance for a few weeks in November, and an alternative is offered during that period.

Free time in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924 and is known as a world capital of mountain sports. During your free time you can wander the pedestrian streets and the church square, follow the Arve river, visit the town's small alpine museum or walk out to the Lac des Gaillands, a quiet lake at the edge of town with a beautiful reflection of the peaks.

Is Chamonix worth visiting for a day? Even without the lifts, the town and its setting are unforgettable. Lunch and drinks are not included; halal food is limited in Chamonix, though vegetarian and fish dishes are easy to find. The best time to visit Chamonix is from late spring to early autumn for the lifts, or winter for snowy landscapes.
