Full Description
Aiguille du Midi cable car from Chamonix
The Aiguille du Midi cable car leaves from the centre of Chamonix at about 1,035 m and climbs in two sections, via the mid-station of Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 m, to the top station at 3,777 m. When it opened in 1955 it was the highest cable car in the world, and the second section still rises almost vertically up the granite. The whole ascent takes about 20 minutes.
This is where a private Aiguille du Midi tour makes a difference. Cabins run on timed slots and summer mornings are busy, so your guide plans the ascent with you, explains what you are seeing on the way up and keeps an eye on the weather. Aiguille du Midi opening hours change with the season, and the lift closes for maintenance for several weeks in late autumn, so we check the timetable for your date.
The summit terraces at 3,842 m
From the top station a lift inside the rock takes you to the summit terrace at 3,842 m. Here Mont Blanc, at about 4,805 m, feels within reach, and on clear days the view runs to the Matterhorn and the Swiss and Italian Alps. Your guide names the peaks, shows you the ice ridge where mountaineers set off for the Vallée Blanche and explains how the glaciers below have changed.
Many visitors also step into the glass box hanging over the void, with about 1,000 m of air beneath their feet. Is Aiguille du Midi worth visiting? On a clear morning, without doubt: few places in Europe put you this high this easily. Expect temperatures well below zero even in summer, and move slowly at this altitude.
The Montenvers rack railway
After coming down and taking a picnic break in Chamonix, you walk with your guide to the little red train station beside the main railway station. The Montenvers rack railway, opened in 1908, climbs about 5 km through larch and pine forest to the Montenvers viewpoint at 1,913 m in roughly 20 minutes.
At the top a terrace opens onto the Mer de Glace and the sharp granite spires of the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses. It is one of the most photographed views in the Alps, and your guide uses it to explain how a glacier moves, why it is grey with rock at its surface and how the landscape looked a century ago.
Mer de Glace and the ice cave
The Mer de Glace, or Sea of Ice, is the longest glacier in France at about 7 km, and in places it is still hundreds of metres thick. From the Montenvers station a short gondola and a long staircase lead down to the ice cave, which is carved fresh into the glacier every year. Markers along the stairs show where the ice stood in past decades, a striking lesson in how fast the glacier is shrinking.
Allow time for the steps back up, and go at your own pace: your guide never rushes you. The best time to visit the Mer de Glace is from late spring to early autumn, when the train and cave are normally open; access to the cave is not guaranteed, and it closes for a few weeks in November.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, the base of your day
Chamonix sits in the Arve valley beneath the highest summit of the Alps and hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. Between the two excursions you have time for a picnic by the river or in the town centre, a quick look at the church square and the pedestrian streets, and a coffee with Mont Blanc above you. In winter the same streets glow with lights under snowy peaks.
How to get to Chamonix: Geneva airport is about 88 km away, around 1 hour 15 minutes by road, and our team can arrange a private transfer on request. Halal food is limited in Chamonix, so we suggest bringing your picnic or choosing vegetarian and fish dishes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is private. Your mountain guide is with your group only for the whole day, so the pace, the stops and the explanations are entirely yours.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes, within the lift timetables. Your guide can spend longer on the summit, shorten the ice cave visit or reorder the day if the weather is better in the afternoon.
How many people can join?
The tour is for your own party: a couple, a family or a group of friends. Tell us your numbers when booking and we confirm the guide arrangement for larger groups.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date and party.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet your guide at the Aiguille du Midi cable car station in Chamonix. We can arrange a private transfer from Geneva or your hotel on request.
What is included?
A private mountain guide specialised in the Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers, explanations of the peaks and glaciers, and help with cable car and train timing. Lift and train tickets and lunch are extra.
How long is the tour?
About 7 hours, from 09:00 to the late afternoon, including the picnic break in Chamonix.
Is it suitable for children or guests with reduced mobility?
Children aged 3 and over can join; the altitude can tire young children. The summit is reached by lifts, but the ice cave needs many steps, so guests with limited mobility can enjoy the viewpoints and skip the cave.
What should I bring?
Warm layers, a windproof jacket, hat, gloves, sunglasses, sun cream, water, a picnic and comfortable shoes with good grip.
What is the best time of day and season?
Early mornings give the clearest summit views. Late spring to early autumn is the best season for the full day, as the ice cave is normally open and the train runs all day.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Mountain lifts can close in wind or storms. Your guide checks conditions in the morning and suggests the best alternative in the valley so your day is not wasted.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date in the booking panel on this page and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes.
