Loire Valley

Plan Loire Valley with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

At first light in the Loire Valley, mist lies over the river like silk. Sandbanks appear and vanish in the slow current, herons stand motionless in the shallows, and white stone towns climb the banks beneath slate roofs. Somewhere beyond the poplars, the turrets of a Renaissance château break through the haze, and a hot-air balloon drifts silently over forests and gardens as the morning warms.

Loire Valley at first sight

The Loire Valley is the garden of France, a long, gentle river valley between Orléans and Angers where French kings and their courts built some of the most beautiful castles in Europe. Its landscape of châteaux, royal forests, formal gardens and troglodyte villages carved into soft limestone is listed by UNESCO, and it lies only about an hour from Paris by high-speed train.

Why include Loire Valley in your itinerary?

  • The greatest château country in the world. Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Blois, Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau all lie within a short drive of each other, each a masterpiece of the French Renaissance with its own story, architecture and gardens.
  • A royal landscape listed by UNESCO. The middle Loire, from Sully-sur-Loire to Chalonnes, is protected as a cultural landscape, with wild sandbanks, historic river towns, royal abbeys such as Fontevraud and cave dwellings carved into the white tuffeau stone.
  • Gentle, unhurried France. With mild weather, quiet roads, riverside paths, gardens in bloom and easy links to Paris, the Loire Valley is ideal for families, couples and anyone who wants elegance without the rush of a big city.

Signature experiences in Loire Valley

Chambord, the Château of Kings

Chambord is the largest château in the Loire, built in the sixteenth century as a royal hunting retreat in a vast walled forest park. Climb its famous double-spiral staircase, where two people can go up and down without meeting, and step out onto the roof terraces, a forest of chimneys, lanterns and turrets. Your entry ticket also opens the formal gardens, and the park is wonderful for spotting deer at dusk.

Chenonceau, the Château on the Water

Chenonceau spans the river Cher on a series of graceful arches, its long gallery reflected in the water below. Shaped over the centuries by a succession of remarkable women, it is filled with tapestries, painted ceilings and fresh flower arrangements, and surrounded by formal gardens, a maze and a vegetable garden. Arrive at opening time to enjoy the gallery before the crowds.

Amboise and Clos Lucé

The royal château of Amboise rises on a rock above the Loire, with terraces looking over the river and the old town's slate roofs. A short walk away, Clos Lucé is a graceful brick-and-stone Renaissance manor whose park displays life-size models of inventive Renaissance machines, from bridges to flying devices, among streams and trees. It makes a delightful half-day for families and curious minds.

The Gardens of Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau

Villandry is famous for its terraced Renaissance-style gardens, with ornamental vegetable beds, clipped box hedges in heart patterns and shaded water gardens. Nearby, Azay-le-Rideau seems to float on an island in the river Indre, one of the most romantic châteaux in France. Together they make a perfect, gentle day west of Tours, ideally with a private car with driver.

Balloons, Caves and River Towns

From spring to autumn, hot-air balloons lift off at dawn or dusk over the châteaux near Amboise and Chenonceau. Around Saumur and along the river near Tours, cave dwellings, mushroom caves and underground villages carved into the white stone reveal another side of the valley. Halal food is easy to find in Tours and Orléans, but limited in the small villages, so we plan meals accordingly.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Loire Valley

Tours

Tours is the largest city in the heart of the valley and the most practical base, with high-speed trains to Paris, many hotels and the medieval old town around Place Plumereau, full of half-timbered houses. It is lively and well connected, with halal restaurants and markets, and most of the great châteaux lie within about forty-five minutes by road.

Amboise

Amboise is a charming small town on the Loire, overlooked by its royal château and close to Chenonceau, about fifteen minutes away. Its riverside, old streets and Sunday market create a relaxed village atmosphere, and boutique hotels and country guesthouses surround it. It suits couples and families who want to wake up among the châteaux.

Blois and the Sologne

Blois climbs the riverbank beneath its royal château, famous for its open spiral staircase, and is the best base for Chambord, about twenty minutes away, and Cheverny. To the south, the Sologne is a land of forests, ponds and quiet manor houses. The area is peaceful and green, ideal for nature lovers and travellers with a car.

Saumur and Anjou

At the western end of the valley, Saumur is an elegant white stone town with a castle above the river, a famous riding school and troglodyte villages all around. Nearby stands the great royal Abbey of Fontevraud. It is calmer than the Tours area, with country guesthouses and small hotels, and is a good link towards Angers and Nantes.

How long to stay in Loire Valley and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend three nights in the Loire Valley. One day for Chambord and Blois, one for Chenonceau and Amboise with Clos Lucé, and a third for Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau. With four or five nights, add Saumur, the caves and Fontevraud, or a sunrise balloon flight over the châteaux.

How to pair it

The Loire Valley pairs naturally with Paris, about an hour away by high-speed train to Tours, making a week of Paris and the châteaux an easy classic. In ten days, continue west to Nantes and the Atlantic coast, or north to Normandy and Mont-Saint-Michel, about three and a half hours by road from Tours. The cathedral town of Chartres is a fine stop on the drive from Paris.

Best time to visit Loire Valley and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best time to visit the Loire Valley is from April to October, when gardens bloom, châteaux keep long opening hours and balloons fly. May, June and September are ideal for mild weather and fewer crowds, while July and August are warm and busy. In December, several châteaux, including Chenonceau and Chambord, are beautifully decorated for the festive season.

The daily rhythm

A Loire Valley day is gentle and unhurried. Mornings start at the first château at opening time, before the coaches arrive. A long lunch in a riverside town follows, then a second château or a garden in the afternoon. Evenings are calm, with a stroll along the river, sunset over the water and an early night before another day of castles.

On-the-ground logistics in Loire Valley

Arrival

Most travellers arrive through Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) and continue by high-speed train to Tours Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, about an hour from Paris Montparnasse, or by road in about two and a half hours. Tours Val de Loire Airport (TUF) has a few seasonal European flights, and Nantes Airport (NTE) serves the western end of the valley. We arrange private transfers from Paris airports or Tours station to your hotel.

Getting around

The châteaux are spread out along the river and its tributaries, and public transport between them is limited. Regional trains link Tours, Amboise, Blois and Saumur, and seasonal shuttle buses serve some châteaux. For most travellers, a private car with driver arranged by our team is by far the easiest way to combine two or three châteaux in a single day.

Local etiquette tip

The Loire Valley follows classic French manners. Greet staff with bonjour when you enter a shop or château and au revoir when you leave. Lunch is served from about noon to two, and village restaurants rarely serve outside those hours. Do not touch furniture or tapestries inside the châteaux. Service is included in bills, so tipping is optional.

Can the Loire Valley be done as a day trip, or does it need an overnight stay?

Day trips from Paris to two or three châteaux are possible, but they mean long hours on the road. We arrange train tickets, transfers, château tickets and a private car with driver.

What is the etiquette in the Loire Valley?

Etiquette in the Loire Valley is courteous and simple. Greet people with bonjour, follow the photography rules in each château, and avoid touching furniture and tapestries. Small villages are quiet and friendly, though English is less common there. Exploring with a private car and driver from our team makes everything easier.

Attraction tickets and private airport transfers. Each has its own page, and the WhatsApp desk combines any of them into one plan with one written price.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Loire Valley?

Tours Val de Loire Airport (TUF) lies about 6 km north-east of central Tours, around 15 minutes by car, with a small number of European routes; Amboise is about 25 km and Chenonceau about 35 km away. Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.

Is there public transport from the airport to Loire Valley?

High-speed trains from Paris reach Tours in about an hour, some stopping at Tours station in the centre and others at the nearby high-speed hub; regional trains serve Amboise, Blois and Chenonceaux, but many châteaux lie outside the towns and buses are infrequent. A private car is the simplest way to combine several châteaux in a day with luggage. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.

Are the prices fixed?

Do the drivers and guides speak Arabic or English?

It depends on the city and the day, so we do not promise a particular language; tell us your preference and we do our best. The WhatsApp desk always works in Arabic and English.

Can I change or cancel a booking in Loire Valley?
