Full Description

Cologne Cathedral and Roncalliplatz

Cologne Cathedral is the city's great symbol and one of the largest Gothic churches in the world. Work began in 1248, stopped for centuries with a crane left standing on the unfinished tower, and was only completed in 1880, when its twin spires of about 157 metres briefly made it the tallest building on earth. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and survived the Second World War while much of the city around it was destroyed.

The tour begins at the Kreuzblume, a full-size replica of the stone finial that crowns each spire, standing on the cathedral plaza so you can grasp its real size. On Roncalliplatz, the open square on the cathedral's south side, your guide explains the facade and the history of its construction. Cologne Cathedral opening hours allow visits on most days outside services, so you can return to see the interior after the walk.

Roman Cologne and the Dionysus mosaic

Cologne began as a Roman settlement on the Rhine and became a colony in the year 50, the capital of the Roman province of Lower Germany. Beside the cathedral lies one of its finest Roman treasures: a large floor mosaic of the third century showing the god Dionysus surrounded by scenes of revelry, discovered in 1941 during building works and preserved where it was found, under the Roman-Germanic Museum.

Next door stands the Museum Ludwig, Cologne's museum of modern art with one of the most important twentieth-century collections in Europe. On the walk you pass these buildings from outside while your guide shows how Roman Cologne still shapes the street plan today. If you want to explore further, Roman Cologne and its museums are an easy follow-up visit after the tour.

The Rhine promenade

From the cathedral the route leads down to the Rhine, the river that made Cologne rich as a trading city in the Middle Ages. The riverside promenade is lined with tall, narrow houses painted in red, yellow, green and blue, with the Romanesque tower of Great St. Martin rising behind them, creating the classic postcard view of the Cologne skyline.

Along the water you can also see the Hohenzollern Bridge, the railway bridge famous for the thousands of padlocks left by couples. Your guide explains how the river shaped the city and how the old town was rebuilt after the war. The Rhine promenade is pleasant at any time of day and is a good spot to return to later for a riverside walk or a sightseeing boat.

Great St. Martin and the merchants' quarter

Behind the riverside houses lies the former merchants' quarter, a small maze of narrow cobbled lanes where traders once stored and sold goods arriving on the Rhine. At its centre stands Great St. Martin, one of Cologne's twelve great Romanesque churches, built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries on Roman foundations. Its massive square crossing tower with four corner turrets is one of the most recognisable shapes of the old town.

Walking through these lanes with your guide, you hear how merchants, guilds and the church shaped daily life in medieval Cologne and how the quarter was carefully rebuilt in its old scale after 1945. It is the most atmospheric part of the walk and a good area to come back to for cafés and small shops.

Alter Markt and the historic City Hall

The tour ends on Alter Markt, the Old Market Square, for centuries the heart of public life in Cologne. The square is framed by tall gabled townhouses and has a fountain at its centre. Just next to it stands the historic City Hall, one of the oldest town halls in Germany, with its Gothic tower from the early fifteenth century decorated with more than a hundred stone figures from the city's history.

Your guide closes the walk with stories about the square and tips for the rest of your stay in Cologne. From Alter Markt it is a few minutes on foot back to the cathedral or down to the river. If you are asking what to do in Cologne after the tour, the old town museums, the cathedral interior and a Rhine cruise are all nearby.
