Full Description
Cologne Cathedral from the Rhine
The cathedral is the reason most people take a Cologne Rhine cruise, and the river is the one place where the whole building fits into a photograph. Its twin spires rise 157 metres above the embankment, which made it the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1880, more than six centuries after the foundation stone was laid in 1248. It holds the gilded Shrine of the Three Kings and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. From the water you see the full length of the nave, the choir facing the river and the flying buttresses that hold the walls up.
The boat passes the cathedral twice, so you get both lighting angles. The commentary explains how the building survived the bombing of 1945 while the city around it was destroyed. If you plan to go inside, Cologne Cathedral opening hours allow a visit before or after the cruise; the entrance is five minutes from the landing stages.
The Old Town riverfront and Great St. Martin
Right beside the cathedral the Old Town of Cologne lines the river in a row of narrow, brightly painted houses around the Fischmarkt, the old fish market, with the massive tower of Great St. Martin behind them. This Romanesque church was built between 1150 and 1250 on the site of a Roman warehouse island, and its central tower with four corner turrets is the second landmark of the Cologne skyline. The whole quarter was rebuilt after the Second World War on the medieval street plan, which is why the roofs step up and down so irregularly.
A Cologne Old Town river cruise is the easiest way to understand this skyline, as the boat sails slowly along the promenade where the old crane, the river police station and the terrace cafés of the embankment stand. Many guests return after the cruise to walk the Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares behind the riverfront, both a few minutes from the landing stages.
Hohenzollern Bridge and Deutz Bridge
The first bridge your boat passes under is the Hohenzollern Bridge, a three-arched steel railway bridge opened in 1911 and rebuilt after the war. It is the busiest railway bridge in Germany, with trains crossing roughly every minute into Cologne main station, and its pedestrian walkway is covered with tens of thousands of love padlocks fixed to the railings. From the water you see the equestrian statues at both ends and the trains thundering overhead, one of the best photographs of the trip.
A few hundred metres further downstream the boat passes the Deutz Bridge, a flat road bridge first opened in 1915 and rebuilt in 1948, and reaches the Deutz bank with the exhibition halls, the arena and the tall tower of the Rhineland regional administration. The commentary explains how the two banks of Cologne grew apart and why the right bank was long considered the wrong side of the river.
The Rheinauhafen and the Crane Houses
South of the Old Town the Rhine passes the Rheinauhafen, a former trading harbour built in the 1890s and converted between 2002 and 2011 into a waterside district of offices, apartments and museums. Its symbol is the trio of Crane Houses, each about sixty metres tall and shaped like an upside-down letter L in memory of the harbour cranes that once stood here. The old warehouses and the Malakoff Tower at the harbour entrance were kept, and the Chocolate Museum occupies a glass building shaped like a ship on the tip of the peninsula, with the German Sport and Olympic Museum beside it.
The boat sails along the whole length of the harbour, so this is the stretch where the modern side of Cologne replaces the medieval one. If you are wondering whether the Rheinauhafen is worth visiting on foot, the cruise gives you the overview first, and the promenade is a ten-minute walk from the Old Town for later.
The South Bridge and how the cruise works
The turning point of the trip is the South Bridge, a steel railway bridge from 1910 with a shape similar to the Hohenzollern Bridge; it marks the southern end of the inner-city riverfront, and from here the boat turns to give you the full return panorama with the cathedral growing larger ahead of you. The whole round trip takes about sixty minutes at an easy pace, with the commentary pointing out each sight in German and then in English.
Departures are at 12:00 and 13:30 from the landing stages on the Old Town embankment, below the cathedral. Check the boards at stages 3 and 7, or ask at the ticket office, to see which boat is yours, then show the QR code of your ticket at the gangway. The boats have an open upper deck and a heated indoor saloon, with snacks and soft drinks for sale, so the Cologne panorama cruise is a good choice in every season.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
It is a shared sightseeing cruise on a large passenger boat with other guests. For a private boat charter on the Rhine in Cologne, contact our team and we will send you options.
How long does the Cologne Rhine cruise take?
About one hour from leaving the landing stage to returning to it. Add fifteen minutes before departure for boarding.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You go to the landing stages on the Old Town embankment yourself; they are a ten-minute walk from Cologne main station.
What is included?
The one-hour panoramic cruise on the Rhine and audio commentary in German and English over the loudspeakers. Food and drinks are not included but can be bought on board.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person, with an adult rate and a child rate for ages 6 to 13; children up to 5 travel free. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is the cruise suitable for children and for reduced mobility?
Children love it, and the youngest travel free. The boat is boarded by a gangway, and because river levels change, boarding can be impossible for wheelchairs and for people with mobility impairments, so we do not recommend it for them.
What should I bring?
Your ticket on your phone, a jacket for the breeze on the open deck, a camera and, in summer, sun protection. You may not bring your own food and drinks on board.
Is Cologne Cathedral visible from the boat?
Yes, this is the best view of it. The boat passes the cathedral at the start and the end of the trip, and the twin spires dominate the skyline for most of the hour.
What is the best time of day for the cruise?
The 12:00 departure has the sun behind the boat for photographs of the Old Town, while the 13:30 departure suits a late lunch afterwards on the embankment. Spring to autumn is the most pleasant for the open deck, but the heated saloon makes winter cruises comfortable too.
What happens in bad weather?
The cruise runs in rain; you can sit inside the glazed, heated saloon and step out on deck between showers. Only extreme high or low water levels on the Rhine can stop the boats, in which case we inform you and rebook or refund.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are allowed on the boat with a separate dog ticket bought at the ticket office before boarding.
How do I book and confirm?
Select the date and departure time in the booking panel on this page and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and emails your QR-code ticket.
