Full Description

Night departure from Flores, Santa Elena or El Remate

The island town of Flores, on Lake Peten Itza, is the usual base for visiting Tikal, together with Santa Elena on the mainland shore and the lakeside village of El Remate, which lies about halfway along the road to the ruins. All three are within easy reach of the park, but reaching Tikal before dawn means leaving in the middle of the night.

Be in your hotel lobby in Flores or Santa Elena at 02:45; the vehicle leaves at 03:00 and collects guests staying in El Remate at about 03:30. The drive of about an hour and a quarter runs through the dark forest, and most travellers doze on the way. If you want dawn at Tikal with everything arranged from your hotel, this early start is the key to being on top of Temple IV at first light.

A pre-dawn walk through the jungle of Tikal

Tikal National Park protects the ruins of the great Maya city and a large area of tropical forest within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, listed together by UNESCO in 1979. Special sunrise access lets small groups enter before the regular opening, and your entry tickets for this early visit are already included with the default option.

With torches or headlamps, the group follows the guide along forest paths for about 45 minutes, passing the dark shapes of overgrown temples. The sounds of the jungle are the unforgettable part: frogs, insects and, as the sky begins to lighten, the deep roar of howler monkeys echoing through the trees. Walk carefully, as roots and stones cross the path, and keep close to the guide.

Sunrise from the top of Temple IV

Temple IV is the tallest pyramid at Tikal, about 65 metres high, built around 741 AD for a Maya king. A wooden staircase climbs its side to a broad platform near the summit, where the group sits on the stone steps in silence and waits for dawn, usually between about 05:30 and 06:00 depending on the season.

As the light comes, the roofcombs of Temple I, Temple II and Temple III appear one by one above a sea of mist and treetops, while toucans and parrots fly across the canopy. Some mornings are crystal clear and others are wrapped in fog, which has its own magic, so the sunrise itself cannot be guaranteed. Is watching dawn at Tikal worth the early start? For the sounds and atmosphere alone, most travellers say yes.

The Great Plaza at the start of the day

After sunrise the guide leads you back through the forest to the Great Plaza, which you see in the soft morning light before the day visitors arrive. Temple I, the Temple of the Great Jaguar, rises about 47 metres on the east side; it was built around 734 AD as the tomb of a powerful king, and faces Temple II, the Temple of the Masks, across the plaza.

Between them stand rows of carved stone stelae and round altars that recorded the dates and deeds of Tikal's rulers. The guide explains how the Maya calendar worked and how ceremonies were staged here for crowds in the plaza. Early in the morning, spider monkeys often move through the trees around the plaza and ocellated turkeys walk across the grass.

The North and Central Acropolis

The North Acropolis, on the north side of the Great Plaza, is the royal burial ground of Tikal, where temples were rebuilt on top of older ones for more than a thousand years. Inside, under protective roofs, you can still see great stucco masks of Maya gods, and archaeologists found the tombs of several kings deep within the platform.

Across the plaza, the Central Acropolis is a complex of palaces and courtyards where the nobility lived. Its multi-storey buildings, with corbelled vaults and narrow doorways, show how a Maya court was organised. This part of the visit gives a human scale to the monumental temples and helps you picture Tikal as a living city of tens of thousands.

The Lost World complex and return to Flores

The tour continues to the Lost World complex, Mundo Perdido, the oldest ceremonial area of Tikal, whose Great Pyramid, about 31 metres high, was used to observe the movements of the sun. Its side stairway can be climbed for a second view over the forest, this time in full daylight, with the temples you saw at dawn now bright against the green.

The archaeological tour ends around late morning, and the vehicle returns to Flores before midday. Meals are not included, so bring breakfast snacks for the early hours. With the hottest part of the day spent back at your hotel or by the lake, the Tikal early morning tour is the coolest and most atmospheric way to explore the site.
