Full Description
Flores and the road to Tikal
Flores is a small island town on Lake Peten Itza, linked by a causeway to Santa Elena on the mainland. Its lanes of brightly painted houses climb to a white church at the top, and the island stands on the site of Nojpeten, capital of the Itza Maya and the last independent Maya kingdom, which fell only in 1697. Today it is the natural base for visiting Tikal.
Our team collects you at 08:00. Buses cannot enter the island, so on Flores a staff member walks you from your hotel lobby to the vehicle, while in Santa Elena and at Mundo Maya Airport you are picked up directly. How to get to Tikal? It lies about 60 kilometres north-east of Flores, roughly an hour and a quarter by road along the shore of the lake and into the forest of the Peten.
Tikal National Park in the Maya Biosphere Reserve
Tikal National Park was created in 1955 and listed by UNESCO in 1979 for both its monuments and its rainforest. It lies in the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected area in Central America, and the ruins are scattered across the jungle, joined by shaded trails. At its height between about 200 and 900 AD, Tikal was one of the most powerful cities of the Maya world.
After the park entrance, where your tickets are already included, the guide leads you past a giant ceiba, the sacred tree of the Maya and national tree of Guatemala. Keep your eyes on the canopy: spider monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and colourful ocellated turkeys are often seen. The park is usually open from 06:00 to 18:00, and this Tikal day trip covers the main sites at a comfortable pace.
The Great Plaza: Temple I and Temple II
The Great Plaza is the ceremonial heart of Tikal. On its east side rises Temple I, the Temple of the Great Jaguar, a steep pyramid about 47 metres high built around 734 AD as the tomb of one of the city's greatest kings, whose burial chamber held jade, shells and carved bones. Facing it across the plaza is Temple II, the Temple of the Masks, about 38 metres high.
Standing between the two pyramids, you understand how the Maya used space and sound: a clap of the hands in the plaza echoes back from the temples. The guide explains the rituals held here and the stone stelae and altars that record dates and rulers. This is the place for the classic photo of Tikal, with Temple I framed by the jungle.
The North Acropolis and the Central Acropolis
On the north side of the Great Plaza, the North Acropolis is a dense platform of temples built one on top of another for more than a thousand years, each new king covering the shrines of his ancestors. Archaeologists found royal tombs deep inside, and under protective roofs you can still see large stucco masks of gods that once decorated the earlier buildings.
To the south, the Central Acropolis is a maze of palaces, courtyards and multi-room buildings where the royal family and nobility lived and governed. Walking through its rooms and stairways gives a sense of daily life in a Maya court. The guide also points out the ball court between the plazas, where a ritual game was played with a heavy rubber ball.
The Lost World complex (Mundo Perdido)
West of the Great Plaza, the Lost World complex, or Mundo Perdido, is one of the oldest parts of Tikal, with constructions beginning centuries before the great temples. Its centre is the Great Pyramid, about 31 metres high, with stairways on all four sides, and the complex was laid out as an astronomical observatory to mark the equinoxes and solstices.
The pyramid can be climbed by a side stairway, and from the top you see the roofcombs of Temple I, II and IV breaking through the forest. It is a quieter area than the Great Plaza, and the guide explains how Tikal grew from a farming village into a city of tens of thousands. Many visitors say it is the most atmospheric corner of the park.
Temple IV, the highest viewpoint at Tikal
Temple IV is the tallest building at Tikal, about 65 metres high, and one of the highest structures built by the ancient Maya. Completed around 741 AD, its base is still largely covered by earth and trees, but a wooden staircase leads to a platform near the top, high above the canopy.
From here the view is unforgettable: an ocean of green stretching to the horizon, with the tops of Temple I, Temple II and Temple III rising above the trees. Is Tikal worth visiting from Flores? This viewpoint alone answers the question. After the climb, the tour returns to the vehicle for lunch with a soft drink and the drive back to Flores in the afternoon.
