Full Description
Perlan on Öskjuhlíð hill
Perlan, which means the Pearl, is one of Reykjavik's most recognisable buildings. Its glass dome was built in the early 1990s on top of six large hot-water tanks on Öskjuhlíð hill, and the tanks still supply the city with geothermal hot water. Since 2017 the building has also housed the Wonders of Iceland museum, so you can visit a real piece of Reykjavik's infrastructure and a modern exhibition in one stop.
If you are looking for Perlan tickets or wondering how to get to Perlan, it sits about two kilometres from the city centre, reached by bus, taxi or a longer walk through the Öskjuhlíð woods. The hill gives it a sweeping view, which makes the building easy to find from many parts of Reykjavik.
The indoor ice cave and the Wonders of Iceland exhibition
The museum's highlight is the ice cave, a long tunnel of real ice and snow that lets you walk inside a glacier without leaving the city. It is kept cold, so the walls glisten and the sound changes as you move through it, and it gives a good sense of what a real glacier cave is like.
Around it, interactive exhibits explain how volcanoes shape the island, how glaciers move and melt, how geothermal energy heats homes and how birds and marine animals live along the coast. A volcano show recreates the power of an eruption, and most displays are designed to work for children and adults alike. Allow at least an hour for the exhibitions.
The Áróra northern lights show
The default ticket also includes the Áróra northern lights show in the planetarium. Lying back under a large dome, you watch the aurora move across the sky in a high-resolution projection, with commentary about how the lights form and the legends behind them. It is a comfortable way to experience the aurora regardless of weather, or as a backup if the sky is cloudy during your stay.
The show is a good pairing with the ice cave because both are about natural forces. Check the show times when you book, as they are set by the museum, and arrive a few minutes early so you can find a good seat.
The observation deck and planning your visit
A 360-degree observation deck around the dome gives views across Reykjavik, the bay, Faxaflói and the mountains beyond, and on a clear day you can see the Snæfellsjökull glacier in the distance. The deck is open-air, so wear warm clothes in winter.
Is Perlan worth visiting? For most travellers, yes, especially for families and for anyone who wants an indoor overview of Iceland's landscapes. Plan two to three hours in total, and check the validity shown at booking. Opening hours change by season, so look at the available slots. Food and drinks can be bought at the café and restaurant on site.
