Full Description
Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO masterpiece
The Reggia di Caserta was commissioned by the Bourbon kings of Naples, who wanted a new capital palace to rival the great courts of Europe. Work began in 1752 and continued for decades, creating a rectangular building with four inner courtyards, five floors and around 1,200 rooms, one of the largest royal residences ever built. In 1997 the palace, its park, the Carolino Aqueduct and the silk village of San Leucio were listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your Royal Palace of Caserta tour begins by looking out over the gardens, so you understand the scale of the complex before stepping inside. With skip-the-line tickets your small group avoids the queues at the ticket office and moves easily between the rooms, while the guide sets the scene of court life in 18th-century Naples.
The grand staircase and the Palatine Chapel
The entrance to the royal apartments is one of the most theatrical spaces in Italy. A wide staircase of 116 marble steps, guarded by two marble lions, rises beneath a double vault to an octagonal vestibule with views in every direction. It was designed to impress foreign ambassadors, and it still does.
From the vestibule you enter the Palatine Chapel, the court chapel where the royal family attended mass. Its long nave with paired columns and a richly decorated vault recalls the great royal chapels of Europe. The chapel was damaged in the Second World War and carefully restored; your guide explains how the decoration was rebuilt and what survived.
The Throne Room, Astrea Room and Four Seasons Room
The royal apartments are a sequence of richly decorated halls. The Throne Room, the largest of them, is covered in gilded stucco, with medallions portraying the kings of Naples around the walls and the royal throne at the far end. The Astrea Room, named after the goddess of justice, glows with gold and celestial motifs.
In the older royal apartment, the rooms of the four seasons show spring, summer, autumn and winter in ceiling frescoes, silk wall coverings and period furniture. Your guide helps you read the symbols in each painting and tells stories of the court, from royal weddings to political turmoil. This is the part of the Reggia di Caserta that most visitors remember.
Palatine Library and the early 19th-century apartments
The Palatine Library is a suite of elegant reading rooms lined with carved wooden bookcases, holding thousands of volumes on history, science, music and the arts collected by the royal family. Painted ceilings, globes and reading tables give it the feeling of a private retreat, a quiet contrast to the grand state rooms.
The tour also visits the apartments decorated in the early 19th century, when Naples was ruled by a king installed by France during the brief French period. Their refined neoclassical furniture, Empire-style beds and delicate wall paintings show how taste changed in only a few decades. Comparing these rooms with the baroque halls is one of the most interesting parts of the visit.
Visiting Caserta from Naples
How to get to the Royal Palace of Caserta: regional trains from Napoli Centrale reach Caserta in about 40 minutes, and the station stands directly opposite the palace across Piazza Carlo di Borbone. That makes the Reggia one of the easiest day trips from Naples, and it pairs well with an afternoon in the park.
Caserta Royal Palace opening hours: the palace is closed every Tuesday and on 1 January and 25 December, so plan your visit on another day. The guided tour covers the palace only; the Royal Park and the English Garden are not part of the guided visit. Spring and autumn are the best time to visit, when the long gardens are green and pleasant to walk.
