Full Description
Tropea from the sea: the cliffs and Santa Maria dell'Isola
Tropea is one of the most celebrated seaside towns of southern Italy, a maze of noble palaces and narrow lanes built on top of a sheer sandstone cliff above white beaches. From the town you look down at the sea; from the boat you finally see the whole picture: old houses lined up on the edge of the rock, the Norman cathedral behind them and the long beach curving below.
Just off the town rises the most famous view in Calabria, the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, a small church on a rocky outcrop that was once an island and is now joined to the shore by the beach. Seen from the water, with its stairway cut into the rock and the cliffs glowing in the sun, it shows why a Tropea boat tour is the best way to begin exploring this coast.
The Coast of the Gods: sea caves and hidden coves
South of Tropea the shoreline becomes the Costa degli Dei, the Coast of the Gods, a stretch of granite cliffs, small beaches and transparent water running from Pizzo to Nicotera. The boat keeps close to the rocks here, passing sea caves and arches carved by the waves, where the water shifts from emerald green to deep blue.
Many of the coves along the way, such as Riaci, Formicoli and Praia di Fuoco, are hard to reach on foot and feel almost private from the sea. Your guide shares the stories behind the names of the caves, points out the best snorkelling spots and slows down where the light inside the grottoes is at its most beautiful. On clear days the volcanic cone of Stromboli appears on the horizon to the north-west.
Capo Vaticano headland
Capo Vaticano is the great headland at the southern end of the route, a massive block of ancient granite rising sheer from the sea and topped by a lighthouse. Its name is often linked to the Latin word vaticinium, a prophecy, recalling the old tale of a seer who lived in a cave on the cape and was consulted by sailors before they set out.
Below the cliffs lie some of the most photographed beaches in Calabria, including Grotticelle with its small bays of white sand, and the water is so clear that the seabed is visible many metres down. Travelling from Tropea to Capo Vaticano by boat reveals the full drama of the headland, which from the land is mostly admired from the viewpoint at the top.
Swimming and snorkelling stops
For most guests the swim is the best part. The boat anchors in a sheltered cove with clear water and you can dive in straight from the deck. Mask and snorkel are provided, together with life jackets for anyone who wants extra confidence in the water, and the crew helps beginners get started.
Underwater, the rocks are dotted with sea urchins and anemones, shoals of bream and small dark damselfish weave between the boulders, and meadows of seagrass sway over the sand; with luck you may spot an octopus hiding in a crack. Bring your own towel, as towels are not supplied, and enjoy the light snacks and drink served on board while you dry off in the sun before the cruise back to Tropea.
Best time to visit Tropea and practical tips
The best time to visit Tropea for a boat trip is from June to September, when the sea is warm and usually calm; late May and early October are quieter and still pleasant for swimming. Morning departures tend to have the calmest water and the clearest visibility for snorkelling, while the afternoon trip brings warm golden light on the cliffs.
Before or after the cruise, climb the steps from the harbour to the old town for the belvedere viewpoints over the sea, the Norman cathedral and local dishes made with Tropea's famous sweet red onion. How to get to Tropea? Regional trains on the Tyrrhenian line stop in town, and the harbour lies a short stroll or taxi ride below the historic centre.
