Overview

This full day out from Florence covers four of the famous cliffside villages in one long day by coach, local train and boat. An air-conditioned coach leaves Florence at 7:00 for La Spezia, and from there you spend free time on the beach and in the old town of Monterosso, sail along the coast to Vernazza from April to October, then hop by train to Manarola and Riomaggiore. An English-speaking tour leader handles the logistics, and the default option includes the national park fee, local trains, the boat ride and a street-food lunch of Ligurian focaccia and fried seafood, with a vegetarian choice. It is a shared group tour of about 12 hours. Two other options are available: a classic day without lunch and a coach-only semi-independent day.

Full Description

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost and largest of the Cinque Terre villages, the only one with long sandy beaches. A rocky headland divides the newer Fegina side, with a giant statue carved into the rocks, from the old town, where lanes lead to a church with a striped black-and-white façade. Lemon groves and anchovy fishing have long shaped local life.

After the coach ride from Florence to La Spezia, a local train brings you along the coast to Monterosso, where you have about two hours of free time. Bring swimwear if you want a swim: the water is clear and the beach is right by the station. This first stop sets the tone for a Cinque Terre tour from Florence: relaxed, colourful and close to the sea.

The Boat Ride along the Ligurian Coast

From April to October, weather permitting, you leave Monterosso by boat and follow the coast to Vernazza. From the water you see what you cannot from the trains, which run mostly through tunnels: cliffs dropping into the sea, dry-stone terraces built over centuries, hidden coves and the old footpath winding high above the waves.

This Cinque Terre boat tour is short but it is a highlight of the day, with the best photo angle of Vernazza's harbour as you arrive. The whole coast, with the villages and Portovenere nearby, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park since 1999. In rough sea or outside the season, the boat is replaced by the train.

Vernazza

Vernazza is often called the most beautiful of the villages: tall pastel houses packed around a tiny natural harbour, a medieval castle tower on the headland and the church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia built right on the rocks by the water. It has been a fishing and trading port since the Middle Ages, and the main street runs down from the station to the square on the sea.

You have about an hour here. On the default option this is where you enjoy the street-food lunch: warm Ligurian focaccia, soft with olive oil and salt, and a paper cone of fried seafood, with a vegetarian alternative. Walk up to the castle area for the view back over the harbour, then meet your tour leader for the train to Manarola.

Manarola

Manarola climbs a dark rock spur above a small harbour, its houses painted in ochre, pink and green. The most photographed view of the Cinque Terre is from the coastal path just north of the village, looking back at the houses stacked above the sea, especially in late afternoon light. A 14th-century church stands at the top of the village.

The train from Vernazza takes about six minutes, and you have about an hour to explore. Between Manarola and Riomaggiore runs the cliffside Via dell'Amore, a short seaside path that has reopened in recent years with limited access. Many visitors simply walk down to the harbour, where boats are pulled up on the slipway and swimmers dive from the rocks.

Riomaggiore and the Way Back

Riomaggiore is the easternmost village, its tall houses lined up down a steep valley towards a tiny harbour where fishing boats rest on the ramp. Above the village stand a castle and a church, and from the harbour rocks you get the postcard view of the houses rising in tiers. It is just two minutes by train from Manarola.

With about 80 minutes here, you can climb to the viewpoints, browse the shops on the main street or sit by the water. Then a 10-minute train returns to La Spezia and the coach drives about two hours back to Florence. Is the Cinque Terre worth visiting in a day from Florence? Yes: with trains and boat organised, the day is full but smooth.
