Full Description
Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano
Mount Etna rises to well over 3,300 metres above the coast of eastern Sicily, and its height changes after each eruption. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so a Mount Etna guided tour is the safest and most rewarding way to see it. The mountain is a landscape of black lava fields, red cinder cones, ash slopes and steaming vents that looks more like the Moon than Italy.
This hike is designed for people who ask whether they can really walk on Etna. With a volcanological guide the answer is yes: the guide reads the conditions, explains the geology and chooses the route that is safe and permitted on the day. Access to the highest areas depends on weather and volcanic activity, and the guide may switch to an alternative route if needed, still aiming for the highest altitude that can be reached safely.
The 3,000 m trek: cable car, Barbagallo craters and the Valle del Bove
The lower trek starts at Rifugio Sapienza, about 1,900 m on the south side, where you take the Etna cable car to roughly 2,500 m. From there you walk across lava flows from some of the most significant eruptions of recent decades, passing several points of geological interest, until you reach the Barbagallo craters at around 3,000 m. Here you can see the summit area and observe volcanic activity from a safe distance.
The descent follows ash slopes to a viewpoint over the Valle del Bove, the vast horseshoe-shaped valley on the eastern flank, before you return by cable car. It is a moderate hike, recommended if you want a serious Etna trek without the full summit effort. Bring warm layers, because it is much colder at height than on the coast.
The summit trek up to 3,400 m to the central craters
The fuller trek starts the same way, with the cable car to about 2,500 m, then adds a 4x4 bus that takes you to 2,850 m. From there you walk for around two hours over recent lava flows and volcanic sand towards the central craters, reaching a maximum altitude of about 3,400 m, depending on weather and volcanic activity. This is the answer for visitors searching how to hike to the top of Mount Etna.
You continue along the rim between the La Voragine and Bocca Nuova craters, then head towards the Southeast Crater with views across Sicily's Ionian coast. The descent follows sandy slopes to about 2,900 m before the cable car takes you down. It is physically demanding, with altitude and loose ground, so choose it only if you are fit and used to walking for several hours.
