Overview
This guided Mount Etna trek takes you to 3,000 m, the highest altitude visitors can normally reach without a summit permit. From the alpine guides' shelter beside Rifugio Sapienza on Etna's south side, you ride the cable car to 2,500 m and a 4x4 to about 2,800 m, then walk with a volcano guide near Torre del Filosofo, facing the summit craters. The route continues to the Barbagallo crater, a lava channel and the 2002 vent, before a descent on soft volcanic sand with views over Valle del Bove. It is a shared group tour of about 5 hours, with around 3 hours of walking. Boots, helmet, windproof jacket and backpack are provided; there is no transfer from Catania, so you reach Rifugio Sapienza on your own.

Full Description
Rifugio Sapienza and the Etna Cable Car
Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,910 m on Etna's southern slope, is the main gateway to the upper volcano and the start of this Rifugio Sapienza excursion. Around it you find the Silvestri Craters, souvenir shops, cafés and the base station of the cable car, rebuilt after the eruptions of 2001 and 2002 swept away earlier installations. On clear days the view stretches down to Catania and the sea.
How to get to Rifugio Sapienza? By car it is about an hour from Catania via Nicolosi on a winding mountain road, and a public bus leaves Catania in the morning. Plan to arrive early: the cable car and 4x4 tickets are paid in cash at the meeting point before the 10:30 start, and the cable car ride up to 2,500 m takes about 20 minutes.
Torre del Filosofo and the Summit Craters at 3,000 m
From the upper cable car station, off-road 4x4 vehicles climb a track of black cinders to about 2,800 m, near the area known as Torre del Filosofo. Legend links the name to an ancient Greek thinker said to have studied the volcano here. This is where the walking begins, in a landscape of ash, bombs and steaming ground with almost no vegetation.
Walking up to 3,000 m, you face the summit craters, which rise to around 3,300 m and change height with each eruption. They are usually out of bounds without special authorisation, so the 3,000 m trek is the best alternative for most visitors. Expect strong wind and low temperatures even in August, which is why the windproof jacket and helmet are part of the kit.
Barbagallo Crater, the Lava Channel and the 2002 Vent
At about 2,900 m the guide stops at the Barbagallo lateral crater, formed during the eruption of 2002 and 2003, and explains how side vents open on Etna's flanks. Nearby you walk on the most recent lava flows, where colours shift from black to rusty red and yellow where sulphur has stained the rock.
The highlight for many is entering a lava channel, a trench where molten rock once flowed, and visiting the effusive vent of the 2002 eruption. Standing at the mouth of a crack that poured out lava only a couple of decades ago makes the volcano's power very real. It is the part of this Etna trekking tour that photographs best, so keep your phone or camera within reach.
Valle del Bove
Valle del Bove is a vast horseshoe-shaped depression on Etna's eastern flank, roughly 5 km wide and 7 km long, with walls rising up to a thousand metres. It formed thousands of years ago when part of the volcano collapsed, and today it collects many of Etna's lava flows, so its floor is a patchwork of dark lava of different ages.
On this trek you reach its edge on foot after a fun descent down slopes of soft volcanic sand. From the viewpoint on a fine day the panorama sweeps from the Ionian coast to the interior of Sicily. It is the quietest moment of the walk and a good place for a short rest before continuing down to the cable car.
Mount Etna Volcano: Planning Your Visit
Mount Etna is Europe's highest active volcano and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, protected inside a regional park. Eruptions are frequent but usually confined to the summit, and guides follow official access rules that can change at short notice. That is why a guided Mount Etna excursion from Catania is the safest way to reach the high zone.
The best time to visit the summit area is from May to October, when the upper slopes are clear of snow; in winter the route can change. Strong wind can stop the cable car, and the guide may adjust the itinerary for safety. Bring a packed lunch and water, since there are no shops above the upper cable car station.
