Full Description

The Roman amphitheatre of Catania, the Black Colosseum

The tour begins in front of the ruins of Catania's Roman amphitheatre, which could hold around 15,000 spectators and was built with dark lava stone from Mount Etna. Its black stone is the reason people call it the Black Colosseum. Most of the arena lies below the modern city, hidden under Piazza Stesicoro and the buildings around it, and only part of it can be seen.

With your guide you go down to the remains to see the arches, corridors and arena walls that once hosted gladiator games. If you are wondering what to see in Catania beyond the cathedral and the fish market, this is one of the most unusual answers. Your ticket to the underground site is included.

Lava caves and the power of Etna

Catania has been destroyed and rebuilt several times because of Mount Etna, and the ground beneath the city holds the evidence: lava flows from prehistoric eruptions, and the great 1669 eruption that buried parts of the city. On the tour you visit a lava cave, a tunnel left by flowing lava, where you can see how Etna's molten rock cooled and shaped the underground.

It is a good way to understand why the city's buildings are made of dark volcanic stone and why locals describe Etna as a force of both danger and protection. The cave visit takes place at street level below the modern city, and you go down a few steps, some of which may be irregular.

The Amenano river and the hidden crypt beneath a Baroque church

The Amenano is a river that flows beneath Catania, out of sight, and resurfaces at the fountain in Piazza Duomo. On this tour you follow its course into a cave, an eerie place where you can hear the water below the streets. The river was buried by lava flows and later by the city's rebuilding, and it stays as a reminder of what lies beneath.

Another site is a hidden space below a magnificent Late Baroque church, where the tour uncovers what lies under the floor. The tour reveals a Catania that visitors rarely see. If any site is unavailable on the day, the organisers replace it with another underground site.

Via Etnea, timing and how to plan the visit

Between sites you walk along Via Etnea, Catania's main street, lined with aristocratic palaces and Late Baroque churches rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. The guide explains the history as you walk, so the tour also works as a short introduction to the city's centre. The whole experience lasts about two and a half hours, and the tour starts at 15:30.

The tour takes place rain or shine; it is cancelled only in the case of prohibitive conditions. You climb some steps to reach the different sites, and going down as far as about 15 metres below street level makes the tour unsuitable for people with claustrophobia. The exact meeting location in the city centre is shown on your voucher.
