Overview

This full-day Mount Etna trekking tour is for walkers who want more than the busy paths around Rifugio Sapienza. A naturalist guide leads a small group of up to 8 from central Catania to Trecastagni for coffee and lunch supplies, then starts hiking at 1,850 m on quieter routes. You pass the Silvestri Craters and the 2001 lava flow, climb about 550 m to roughly 2,400 m along the rim of Valle del Bove, and eat lunch facing the South-East crater and the Ionian coast. Full Description

Trecastagni, Gateway to the Southern Slopes

Trecastagni is a hill town at about 600 m on Etna's south-eastern slope, built of grey lava stone and surrounded by orchards and old volcanic cones. Its main church stands on a terrace above the town, and on clear mornings you can see down to Catania and the sea. It is a typical Etna village, where daily life runs on coffee and pastry from the local café.

On this Etna hike from Catania the van stops here for about 20 minutes. You can have a coffee, buy water and a freshly made sandwich for lunch, and listen to the safety briefing before the climb. If you are driving yourself, Trecastagni is also where you can join the group, which saves the trip into central Catania.

Silvestri Craters and the 2001 Lava Flow

The Silvestri Craters are a pair of side cones near Rifugio Sapienza, formed during the eruption of 1892 and now covered in reddish cinders and pioneer plants. Their rims are a classic Etna sight, and this Silvestri Craters hike approaches them from the quieter side, starting at 1,850 m where few visitors go.

Nearby you walk across the lava flow of 2001, when fissures opened on the southern flank and lava ran down towards the refuge, damaging roads and buildings. The guide shows how fresh lava differs from older flows, how plants slowly return and how scientists read each eruption in the rock. The ascent here is gradual and gives time to adapt to the altitude.

The Rim of Valle del Bove

Valle del Bove is the vast horseshoe-shaped valley on Etna's eastern side, formed thousands of years ago when part of the volcano collapsed. Its walls drop up to a thousand metres to a floor of black lava, and many recent eruptions have poured into it. Walking along its rim is the most spectacular part of this Valle del Bove hike.

The route climbs gradually to about 2,400 m, roughly 550 m above the starting point, with the valley on one side and the summit area on the other. The lunch break is taken here, facing the South-East crater, the youngest and most active of the summit craters, with the Ionian coast shining far below. The guide adapts the pace to the group.

Volcanic Sand Descent and Lava Cave

After lunch the group leaves the rim and descends on slopes of soft volcanic sand, where each step sinks in and you can almost run downhill. It is the part of the day that makes everyone smile, and the trekking shoes and poles provided make it safe and comfortable. The route then crosses older lava fields towards the road.

When volcanic activity allows, the hike includes a lava cave, a tunnel left when the outer crust of a flow cooled while molten rock drained from inside. Your guide leads you in with care to see the smooth walls and lava drips. After strong tremors or an eruption, the cave visit is not possible for safety, even if the eruption has ended.

Rifugio Sapienza and Planning Your Etna Hike

The hike ends with a 30-minute break at Rifugio Sapienza, the mountain refuge at about 1,910 m on Etna's southern slope, with cafés, souvenir shops and stalls of local honey and pistachio sweets. It is the hub of the upper volcano and the departure point of the cable car to the summit area.

The best time for a Mount Etna trekking tour is from April to November; in winter snow can change the route. The ascent is about 550 m, so a good level of fitness is needed. Bring only what you need for the hike, and leave laptops and heavy items at your hotel. The van returns to central Catania in about an hour.
