Full Description

Etna's northern slope and the 2002 lava front

Most Mount Etna tours go to the crowded southern side, but this one explores the northern slope, where forests, quiet roads and dramatic lava fields make the day feel more remote. Your first stop is a lava front from the eruption of 2002, the largest in recent times, which destroyed the ski facilities of Piano Provenzana and part of the Ragabo pine forest. You reach it on an off-road route in a small vehicle.

Standing next to a wall of solidified lava that is many metres high, you can touch it and see how the forest returned to the ash. Your guide explains how the mountain behaves and why eruptions on this side are so different from those in the south. If you are searching for a Mount Etna day trip that shows more than a parking lot and a cable car, this is a strong choice.

The Sartorius Craters trek and the Grotta dei Ladroni

From the Mareneve road, near Rifugio Citelli, you begin an easy hike of about three kilometres, climbing gently from about 1,665 to 1,775 metres. The path winds through white birch trees and beside the small craters known as the Sartorius Craters, and from several viewpoints you can see Calabria and the Aeolian Islands on clear days. It is a walk suitable for almost everyone in normal health, so do not worry about the effort.

After the trek you enter the Grotta dei Ladroni, also called the Grotta delle Nevi, a lava tunnel partly dug by people. A date, 1776, is engraved on a stone above the entrance. In past centuries locals stored snow here in winter and sold it in the warm months. A helmet and torch are provided for the cave, and your guide explains how it formed.

The Alcantara Gorges lava canyon

The Alcantara Gorges, also known as the Larderia Gorges, are a narrow canyon carved by the Alcantara River through ancient lava flows. The walls are a striking pattern of basalt columns, and the water is cold and clear even in mid-summer. The gorges lie in the Alcantara River Park in the Alcantara Valley, about twenty-five minutes by vehicle from the lunch stop, near the hilltop village of Castiglione di Sicilia.

Your entry to the Alcantara Gorges Botanical Park is included. You go down to the canyon by the municipal entrance and have free time to walk along the river, relax by the small beach or swim. It is the ideal cool-down at the end of a hot day, so bring swimwear, a towel and water shoes for the rocky riverbed.

Lunch, transfers and how the day flows

Between the mountain and the canyon you stop at a local Etna restaurant for lunch. Your ticket includes a first course, water and coffee, and you can tell the restaurant about any food allergies when you order. Bottled water is also provided during the day.

The day starts around 9:00 with a transfer from one of nine arranged meeting points in the Catania area, chosen for you when you book. It is a shared full-day tour of about eight hours in English. The tour uses SUVs and people carriers of up to eight passengers rather than big buses, and the programme can change with weather to keep everyone safe. Cable car and summit access are not part of this tour.
