Full Description
Piazza Unità d'Italia and Riva Tre Novembre
Piazza Unità d'Italia is the grand living room of Trieste, a vast rectangular square that opens straight onto the Adriatic and is often described as the largest square in Europe facing the sea. It is framed by monumental palaces built when Trieste was the chief port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: the Town Hall with its clock tower, the Palazzo del Governo with gold mosaics on its facade and the former headquarters of the empire's great shipping line.
In the middle stands the Fountain of the Four Continents from the 1750s, and after dark a row of blue lights glows along the edge of the paving by the water. The bus departs from Riva Tre Novembre, the seafront road right beside the square, so arrive a little early and stroll across it before boarding. Almost every Trieste city tour begins on this spot.
The Molo Audace pier
Next to the square, the Molo Audace pier stretches around 250 metres into the bay. It was built in the mid-18th century on top of the wreck of an old ship, the San Carlo, which had sunk in the harbour, and in 1922 it was renamed after the first Italian navy ship to dock in Trieste at the end of the First World War.
Today the pier is where locals love to stroll at sunset, sit with their feet over the water or watch the fierce bora wind whip up the waves in winter. From the bus you see its long stone line reaching out into the open gulf; after the tour, walk out to the bronze compass rose at its tip for the finest view back over the seafront palaces and the hills above the city.
The Canal Grande and the Borgo Teresiano
The Canal Grande of Trieste was dug in the 1750s so that merchant ships could sail right into the heart of a new commercial district, the Borgo Teresiano, laid out in a neat grid of streets under Empress Maria Theresa, after whom the quarter is named.
Small boats still moor along the water, and the canal is lined with neoclassical palaces and cafés with tables outside. At its far end rises the church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo with its classical columns, while the blue domes of the Serbian Orthodox church of San Spiridione stand on the bank, a reminder of the Greek, Serbian, Jewish and Slovene communities that made Trieste a crossroads of Central Europe. The audio guide tells the story of this multicultural port as the bus rolls past.
The coastal road and Barcola
Leaving the centre, the bus follows the coastal road north along the Gulf of Trieste, with the sea on one side and the steep, wooded slopes of the Karst on the other. On clear days you can look across the water to the coast of Slovenia and the Istrian peninsula.
The drive passes Barcola, the long seafront promenade where the people of Trieste swim, sunbathe on wide concrete platforms and walk in every season, and you can spot the Faro della Vittoria, a tall lighthouse and memorial on the hill above the port. It is one of the most scenic short drives in north-east Italy, and the large bus windows make it easy to enjoy the view and take photos while the commentary explains each landmark along the shore.
Miramare Castle
The highlight of the route is Miramare Castle, a white limestone castle built between 1856 and 1860 for a Habsburg archduke on a rocky promontory jutting into the sea. Its romantic towers and terraces, and the surrounding park of exotic trees, ponds and gardens, make it the most photographed landmark of Trieste.
The bus tour shows you the castle in its seaside setting; the furnished rooms, with their original interiors and nautical decoration, can be visited separately with an entry ticket, which is not included. If you plan to come back, Miramare Castle opening hours generally run from morning to early evening, and the park is open to walk. Is Miramare Castle worth visiting? Yes, especially on a clear morning, when the white stone shines against the blue gulf.
