Full Description

The Frasassi Caves: discovery of an underground world

The Frasassi Caves lie inside Monte Valmontagnana, above the Frasassi gorge in the municipality of Genga. The main system was discovered in 1971 by young cavers from Ancona who felt a current of air coming from a crack in the rock and lowered themselves into an immense dark void. The caves opened to the public a few years later and have become one of the best-known natural sights in Italy.

They were shaped over immense geological time by water rich in sulphur that dissolved the limestone along fractures, creating a multi-level labyrinth of chambers and passages. Dripping water then deposited calcite drop by drop, forming the stalactites and stalagmites you see today, some still growing. The Frasassi Caves guided tour follows a safe, lit route through the most spectacular part of this world.

Inside the caves: the great chambers and formations

The route begins with the Ancona Abyss, a chamber so vast that it is often said a great cathedral could fit inside it, with formations known as the Giants rising from its floor. You continue past Niagara, a frozen cascade of white flowstone, the Little Fairy's Castle with its slender spires, and the Crystallized Lake, a still pool lined with sparkling crystals.

Further on come the vast 200 Hall, the deep Gran Canyon, Ursa's Hall and the Neverending Hall, each with its own shapes and colours. Your guide explains how each formation was created and points out details you would easily miss. The walk is about 1.5 hours on an easy path, with some damp and uneven surfaces, and photography may be restricted in places.

The Frasassi gorge and the Valadier Temple

Outside, the Sentino river has carved the narrow Frasassi gorge between steep limestone walls covered in woods, part of a regional nature park. The road and the railway follow the river, and the scenery is a beautiful sight in itself, especially in spring and autumn.

A short uphill path from the gorge leads to a cave sanctuary where an elegant octagonal neoclassical temple was built in the 19th century inside the rock, known as the Valadier Temple, beside a small medieval hermitage church. It is not part of this ticket, but you can visit it on your own before or after the caves if you have time. Allow about 20 minutes on foot each way from the road.

San Vittore delle Chiuse and Genga

The ticket office stands at San Vittore delle Chiuse, a hamlet beside the river with a fine Romanesque abbey church from the 11th century, built of pale stone with a sturdy round tower. Next to it, a small museum displays fossils and archaeological finds from the area, including traces of ancient animals found in the caves; entry is included with your ticket.

Above the gorge, the medieval village of Genga keeps its walls, narrow lanes and a castle setting, with an art museum of religious paintings and objects that is also included. Visiting both makes a pleasant half day around the caves, and the villages offer places to eat local food from the Marche hills.

How to get to the Frasassi Caves and when to visit

The caves are in the Marche region, about an hour by car from Ancona on the main road towards Fabriano, with a large car park at the ticket office in San Vittore delle Chiuse. Travellers by train can use Genga-San Vittore Terme station on the Rome to Ancona line, a short walk from the ticket office. The English-language tour starts at 11:40, so arrive in good time to collect your ticket and board the shuttle bus.

The caves are open all year, and because the temperature stays at about 14°C, any season is a good time to visit the Frasassi Caves. Summer and holiday weekends are the busiest; weekdays outside August are calmer. Wear closed shoes with good grip and bring a sweater or light jacket.
