Full Description
The Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheatre
The Verona Arena was built around 30 AD and is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Its oval of pale pink and white local limestone measures roughly 150 by 120 metres, and in Roman times it could hold around 30,000 spectators for gladiator fights and public games. Verona Arena tickets are among the most sought-after in the city, so priority access saves time.
Today the Arena still stands at the centre of city life, with tiers of stone seats and vaulted corridors that echo when the crowds arrive. Many visitors ask whether the Verona Arena is worth visiting even without a show. It is: the scale and the survival of the stone make it one of Italy's great Roman monuments.
Inside the Arena: the stands, arches and arena floor
Your guide leads you through the vaulted passages that once carried crowds to their seats and up into the stone tiers, where you can look across the whole ellipse. Only a small section of the outer ring survives, because an earthquake in 1117 brought down most of it; the rest of the outer wall was reused for buildings in the city.
The guide explains the structure, the drainage and entrances, and how the Romans organised such large audiences with a system of numbered gates. The visit lasts about 45 minutes and involves stairs and uneven stone, so wear comfortable shoes. Ask about the best place for photographs and views over Piazza Bra.
The Verona Opera Festival
Since 1913 the Arena has hosted a summer opera festival, one of the best-known open-air opera seasons in the world. The stone tiers act as seating and the elliptical shape gives the stage a natural acoustic, so audiences from everywhere gather for evening performances.
Verona Arena opening hours and access change during the festival season, and on performance days parts of the monument may be closed to visitors while the stage is set. Your guide explains how the sets are built and how the venue is prepared, which gives you a look at the Arena as a working theatre.
Piazza Bra and the historic centre
The Arena stands on Piazza Bra, one of the largest squares in Italy, lined with cafes, the marble-paved promenade known as the Liston and the elegant Gran Guardia building. It is the natural starting point for a walk through the historic centre of Verona.
From here it is about a ten-minute walk along Via Mazzini to Piazza delle Erbe, and a little further to Castelvecchio. After your tour, use the rest of the afternoon to explore, or combine the Arena with our hop-on hop-off bus ticket to see more of the city. The best time to visit Verona is spring and early autumn.
