Full Description

Piazza Bra and the Verona Arena

Both routes begin at Piazza Bra, the large square in front of the Verona Arena, so it is the natural place to start and end. The Roman amphitheatre dates from around 30 AD and still hosts an opera festival each summer. Bus tickets do not include entry to the Arena, but you can see its outer wall from the bus stop and add a visit on your own.

The square is also lined with cafes and the marble Liston promenade, which makes a good place to wait for the next bus. If you are asking about the best way to see Verona in one or two days, starting with a Verona sightseeing bus gives you the layout of the city before you decide where to spend your time.

Castelvecchio and the Basilica of San Zeno

Castelvecchio is a fourteenth-century fortress on the Adige river, built by the Scaliger family, and its bridge, the Ponte Scaligero, is one of the best-known views of Verona. The castle houses the civic art museum today and is a good stop for a half-hour walk on the ramparts.

A little further along the red route is the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, a twelfth-century Romanesque church known for its bronze doors and its calm cloister. Both stops are outside the busiest streets, and the bus saves you the walk. If you want to visit the interior, allow around an hour for each.

Roman Theatre and Castel San Pietro

The Roman Theatre, built in the first century BC on the hillside above the Adige, is one of the finest ancient theatres in northern Italy, and its museum sits in a former convent on the slope. The blue route stops nearby, so it is easy to add it to your day.

Above it stands Castel San Pietro on the hill, with the classic panorama of Verona: the bends of the Adige, the domes and towers and the red-tiled roofs. It is the best viewpoint in the city, and a good stop for photographs at the end of the afternoon.

Piazza delle Erbe, the Duomo and the old centre

Piazza delle Erbe was the Roman forum and is still Verona's market square, with a fountain, painted palaces and the Lamberti Tower rising above it. The nearby streets hold the famous balcony courtyard that draws visitors from around the world, and the Duomo, a Romanesque and Gothic cathedral from the twelfth century.

The centre is compact and pleasant on foot, so many travellers use the bus to reach the outer sights and walk the centre. The ticket helps you cover Verona over two days without tiring your legs. Check the timetable in your voucher, because first and last departures differ by line and season.
