Full Description

Sirmione, the town on the peninsula

Sirmione sits at the end of a narrow peninsula that reaches about four kilometres into the south of Lake Garda, and its old town is a maze of stone lanes that are mostly closed to traffic. It has been settled since Roman times, and many visitors ask whether Sirmione is worth visiting. It is, for the setting alone: water on three sides, the castle at the gate and the mountains in the distance.

Your guide leads a walking tour of the historic centre, explaining the Roman and medieval layers of the town and its spa tradition based on hot springs beneath the lake. After the tour you have free time to walk, shop, eat lunch (not included) and have an ice cream by the water. The town is busiest at midday in summer, so go early if you can.

Scaligero Castle and the Grotte di Catullo

The Scaligero Castle, or Rocca Scaligera, guards the entrance to Sirmione. It was built in the thirteenth century by the Scaligeri, the lords of Verona, and it is surrounded by water with its own small harbour inside. It is one of the best-preserved lake fortresses in Italy and the most photographed building in the town.

At the tip of the peninsula lie the Grotte di Catullo, the ruins of a large Roman villa named after the poet Catullus, although the villa is a little later than his lifetime. It is among the largest Roman residential complexes in northern Italy, with wide views over the lake. The visit is optional and the entrance ticket is not included, so ask your guide if you want to add it.

The boat cruise on Lake Garda

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, and the boat crossing from Sirmione to Lazise shows it from the water: olive groves, small harbours, castles and the Alps rising at the northern end. A Lake Garda boat tour is the most relaxed way to travel between two towns, and the ride takes roughly an hour.

Weather can affect the boat schedule, and if conditions are unsafe the guide will choose the best alternative for the group. Sit on the open deck if the day is bright, and keep a light jacket handy, because it can be breezy on the water.

Lazise, the medieval walled town

Lazise is one of the most attractive small towns on the Veronese shore. Its medieval walls, its Scaliger castle and its small harbour give it a calm, old-world feel. It was one of the early free communes in Italy, with written statutes from the Middle Ages, and in the eighteenth century the Republic of Venice built a customs house on the waterfront.

Your free time here lets you stroll along the lakefront, browse local shops and sit at a waterside cafe. Lazise is a good place for an easy lunch (not included) before the coach ride back to Verona in the late afternoon. On the reverse departure, you begin here and finish the day in Sirmione.
