Full Description

Como

Como sits at the southern tip of the lake's western branch and began as the Roman town of Comum, whose grid of streets still shapes the old centre. Your guide leads you to the cathedral, built from 1396 to the 18th century, where a Gothic body, a Renaissance facade and a later baroque dome meet in white marble. Beside it stands the Broletto, the striped medieval town hall of 1215.

Como grew rich on silk, and for centuries it was the European capital of silk weaving; small shops in the centre still sell scarves and ties made here. The guided walk and free time last about an hour and end on the lakeside promenade, where the boats leave. A funicular climbs from the shore to the village of Brunate, a good idea if you return to Como on another day trip from Milan.

The boat ride on Lake Como

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three long branches meeting at Bellagio, and it is among the deepest lakes in Europe, with steep wooded mountains plunging straight into the water. The boat leaves Como and spends about 105 minutes travelling north, calling at small villages on both shores while your guide points out the landmarks.

The best part of this Lake Como boat cruise is the parade of historic villas: neoclassical Villa Olmo near Como, the terraced gardens of Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo, and Villa del Balbianello on its wooded headland near Lenno. You also pass Isola Comacina, the lake's only island, once a fortified stronghold. Reserved seats and priority boarding are included, so you are not left standing at busy times. Sit outside on the upper deck if the weather allows.

Bellagio

Bellagio stands on the tip of the promontory where the lake divides, which is why it is called the pearl of Lake Como: from its waterfront you look down two branches of the lake at once. The village is a maze of stepped cobbled lanes climbing from the harbour, lined with silk and craft shops, and crowned by the Romanesque Basilica of San Giacomo, built in the 12th century.

Your guide gives a short tour before about 105 minutes of free time for lunch and exploring. You can walk to the lakeside gardens of Villa Melzi, stroll the arcaded waterfront or simply sit and watch the boats. If you have ever wondered whether a Bellagio day trip from Milan is possible without a car, this is exactly how it works, with the timing and tickets handled for you.

Varenna

A 15-minute ferry crosses to Varenna on the eastern shore, a fishing village whose pastel houses are stacked up the slope above a tiny harbour. A lakeside walkway, often called the lovers' walk, runs along the water from the harbour towards the ferry pier, and the medieval Vezio Castle watches over the village from the hillside above.

The visit lasts about 45 minutes. Two villas with lakeside gardens stand in the village: Villa Monastero, a former convent with a botanical garden stretching along the shore, and Villa Cipressi with its terraces of cypress trees; entrance is not included but you can buy tickets on the spot during free time. Many travellers find Varenna the most romantic stop of the day. From Varenna station the train returns to Milan Central Station in about an hour.
