Overview

Full Description
Campo San Bartolomio and the Rialto area
The walk begins in Campo San Bartolomio, a lively little square just a few steps from the Rialto Bridge. For centuries this was the commercial heart of Venice: merchants from all over Europe met here, the great warehouse of the German traders stood on the canal next door, and the Rialto markets supplied the whole city. The guide waits just outside the pharmacy in the square.
From here the route turns away from the crowds that cross the bridge and dives into the side lanes. As the evening light fades, the city changes character: footsteps echo under the low passageways, the canals turn dark and every engraving on a stone or odd sign on a wall becomes the beginning of a story. It is the perfect start for a Venice ghost tour.
Hidden corners of old Venice
Venice is full of details that only reveal themselves to the attentive eye: an engraving on the stone, a dark corner, a heart set into a wall, a narrow sotoportego passing under a building. Your guide stops at a hidden corner of the old city, away from the main routes, to show you how these small signs are linked to Venetian legends and real events.
The tales you hear are a careful mix: popular stories that Venetians have told each other for generations, and true episodes from the archives of the Republic, with its strict courts, secret denunciations and tangled family rivalries. The atmosphere is mysterious rather than frightening, which is why the walk works well for families too.
Corte Seconda del Milion
Corte Seconda del Milion is one of the oldest courtyards in Venice, a small enclosed space reached through a covered passage near the church of San Giovanni Grisostomo. Its walls preserve a beautifully carved Veneto-Byzantine arch from the twelfth or thirteenth century, a rare survival of the early city, and by tradition this was where the family of the great medieval Venetian merchant who travelled to China had their houses.
In the evening the courtyard is almost silent, and the guide uses this setting to tell some of the most curious stories of the tour. It is also a lovely spot for photos, with the old brick façades lit by a few lamps, and a place many visitors never find on their own.
Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo
The route then reaches Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, one of the largest and most impressive squares in Venice. On one side rises the immense Gothic church of the Dominican friars, where many doges of Venice are buried; next to it stands the marble façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, decorated with lions carved in perspective, which today forms the entrance of the city hospital.
In the centre of the square a Renaissance bronze equestrian statue of a mercenary captain watches over the stone wellhead. The guide explains the history of this neighbourhood of Castello and tells the legends attached to it. If you want to know what to see in Venice beyond the postcard sights, this square is a perfect answer.
St. Mark's Square at nightfall
The walk ends in St. Mark's Square, the great heart of Venice, where the domes of the basilica, the bell tower and the arcades of the Procuratie light up as night falls. Here the guide shares the last stories of the evening, including the old Venetian superstition about the two granite columns of the nearby Piazzetta, where public executions once took place.
Finishing here is practical too: you are in the centre of the city, with water bus stops along the waterfront and many places to have dinner nearby. Many travellers say that seeing the square at night, after an hour and a half of hidden lanes and stories, is one of the best things to do in Venice at night.
