Overview
This Milan half-day tour brings together the three visits most travellers want and often struggle to book: the Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie with a guaranteed timed entry, a guided visit inside Milan Cathedral, and the La Scala Theatre Museum with a look into the opera house auditorium from a box. A licensed guide leads a shared group through Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the historic centre on foot, then a short coach transfer takes you across the city to the refectory. The default departure starts in the afternoon in English; a morning departure narrated in English and Spanish is also available. There is no hotel pickup: the tour starts at the visitor centre at Largo Cairoli.

Full Description
Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Last Supper
Santa Maria delle Grazie is a Dominican church and convent begun in 1463; a few decades later the ruling Sforza duke had its east end rebuilt with the elegant brick and terracotta dome you see today. In the old refectory, the monks' dining hall, the Last Supper was painted on the north wall between about 1494 and 1498. It shows the moment Christ announces that one of the apostles will betray him, with the apostles reacting in groups of three. The church and the mural together are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The painting was made on dry plaster, so it began to flake within decades; it survived a 1943 bombing behind sandbags and was restored over some twenty years until 1999. Visitors enter in small groups through climate-controlled chambers for a timed slot of about 15 minutes. Because Last Supper tickets sell out weeks ahead, guaranteed entry is the main reason to book this tour.
Milan Cathedral (Duomo)
Milan Cathedral was begun in 1386 and took nearly six centuries to complete, which explains the blend of Gothic spires and a facade finished in the early 1800s. It is built of white Candoglia marble with pink and grey veins, once carried to the city by boat along the canals. From the square you see a skyline of pinnacles and statues crowned by the gilded Madonnina, the city's protective symbol since 1774.
Inside, your guide leads you along the five aisles between huge pillars to the great stained-glass windows of the apse, the striking statue of Saint Bartholomew carrying his own skin, and the brass meridian line set in the floor in 1786. Allow about 40 minutes. The rooftop terraces are not part of this Milan Duomo and Last Supper tour; visitors who want the roof can return another day with a separate ticket.
La Scala Theatre Museum and the opera house
Teatro alla Scala opened in 1778 on the site of the church of Santa Maria alla Scala, which gave the theatre its name. Badly damaged by bombs in 1943, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1946, and the season still opens every year on 7 December, the feast of Saint Ambrose, Milan's patron saint. From the outside the facade is sober; the drama is all inside.
The museum next to the theatre displays costumes, historic instruments, stage designs, portraits and theatre memorabilia collected since the early 1900s. The best part comes when you step into a box and look down on the horseshoe auditorium with its red velvet, gilded tiers and great chandelier. That view depends on the stage: during rehearsals or special events the auditorium may be closed, while the museum rooms remain open. The visit lasts about 30 minutes.
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, named after the first king of united Italy, was built between 1865 and 1877 to link Piazza del Duomo with Piazza della Scala. Its two arcades cross beneath a central octagon covered by a glass and iron dome, and the walls are lined with stucco, statues and lunette paintings representing the continents. Milanese people call it the city's drawing room.
On the floor, mosaics show the coats of arms of Milan, Turin, Florence and Rome; local tradition says that spinning on your heel over the Turin bull brings good luck, and your guide will show you where. The Galleria is part of the guided walk between La Scala and the Duomo, so it takes only a few minutes, but it is one of the most photographed interiors in Milan and worth a longer look after the tour, especially in the evening light.
