Full Description
Ercolano and the Ercolano Scavi station
Ercolano is the modern town built over ancient Herculaneum, on the lower slopes of Vesuvius about 10 kilometres south-east of Naples. Its Ercolano Scavi station sits on the local Circumvesuviana railway, roughly 20 minutes from Naples Garibaldi and about 50 minutes from Sorrento, which makes it the simplest base for travellers asking how to get to Vesuvius by public transport. The shuttle bus waits right in front of the station.
The ruins of Herculaneum are a short walk downhill from the station, so many visitors climb the volcano in the morning and explore the excavations in the afternoon, seeing both the cause and the result of the eruption of 79 AD. The town also has a stretch of 18th-century aristocratic villas along the old road to Torre del Greco, known as the Golden Mile.
The road up through Vesuvius National Park
From Ercolano the bus follows the panoramic road that winds up the western flank of the volcano. On the lower slopes you pass orchards, small farms and pine woods growing on fertile volcanic soil, famous for apricots and the small, sweet piennolo tomatoes. Higher up the landscape changes abruptly: grey and black lava from the 1944 eruption covers the ground, broken only by lichens and yellow broom.
The ride takes about 30 minutes and ends at the park entrance at about 1,000 metres, where your timed ticket is checked. The national park protects both Vesuvius and the older Monte Somma ridge to the north, and the stretch you see from the bus window is one of the best places to understand how recent the eruptions really are. Sit on the right going up for the widest views over the coast.
The Great Cone trail and the crater
From the entrance a wide path of loose volcanic gravel climbs the Great Cone in long zigzags. A park naturalist guide walks the trail with visitors from the entrance to the top, pointing out the layers of ash and scoria, the plants that colonise fresh lava and the history of the eruptions. Most people reach the rim in 30 to 40 minutes, stopping often for photos.
At the top you look into a crater around 450 metres wide and some 300 metres deep, its walls coloured in reds, ochres and greys, with wisps of steam still rising from the fumaroles. Vesuvius has been quiet since 1944 but is constantly monitored, and the trail is opened only when conditions are safe. The 2 hours available are enough to climb, walk the open section of the rim and come back down at an easy pace.
Views, timing and the best time to visit Vesuvius
On a clear day the summit view takes in the whole Bay of Naples: the city and its port, the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the cliffs of the Sorrento peninsula, with Pompeii spread on the plain below. Early departures usually give the cleanest air, while summer afternoons can be hazy and very hot on the exposed path.
The best time to visit Vesuvius is spring or autumn, with mild temperatures and fewer visitors. Whatever the season, punctuality matters on this ticket: the park entry is valid only for its booked hour, and a late arrival at the station means the ticket can no longer be used. Plan your train from Naples or Sorrento with a margin, and bring warm layers, because the summit is often windy and much cooler than the coast.
