Overview
This Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius day trip from Naples links the volcano with the two Roman towns it buried in 79 AD, all in one shared minibus day of about 8.5 hours. An English-speaking driver takes the group first up to the Great Cone of Vesuvius for about 1.5 hours at the crater, then down to Herculaneum for about 2 hours with a digital audio guide, and finally to Pompeii for about 2 hours with an audio guide and a detailed map, including the Forum and the amphitheatre. Skip-the-line tickets to all three sites are included, so time goes into visiting rather than queuing. There is no live guide. Departures are at 08:40 and 09:20 from a meeting point in Naples; another option starts in Pompeii.

Full Description
The Great Cone of Mount Vesuvius
The day starts with the drive of about 40 minutes from Naples up the slopes of Vesuvius National Park. From the car park, a wide gravel path climbs the Great Cone, the summit of the volcano at about 1,281 metres, in roughly 30 minutes. At the rim you look into a crater some 450 metres wide, with steam still escaping from fumaroles, and across the whole Bay of Naples to Capri and the Sorrento peninsula.
Starting at the volcano makes sense: you see where the eruption of 79 AD came from before visiting the towns it destroyed, and the morning hours are cooler for the climb. You have about 1.5 hours at the park. Park volcano guides are often present at the summit, and the paths are steep and loose underfoot, so good shoes and a hat are essential.
Herculaneum Archaeological Site
Next the minibus drives about 30 minutes down to Ercolano, where the ruins of Herculaneum lie in a deep pit below the modern town. This elegant seaside resort was buried under some 20 metres of hardened volcanic material, which preserved wooden beams, upper floors, doors and even food. It is smaller than Pompeii but far better preserved, and many travellers find it the surprise of the day.
With your skip-the-line ticket and a digital audio guide on your phone, you spend about 2 hours exploring houses with bright mosaics and frescoes, public baths with intact vaults and benches, shops with their counters and storage jars, and the ancient shoreline where people sought refuge from the eruption. The compact layout makes it easy to see the main sights without rushing.
Pompeii: the Forum and the heart of the city
The final stop is the Pompeii Archaeological Site, about 30 minutes away. Here you collect an audio guide and a detailed map and explore at your own pace for about 2 hours. Most visitors start with the Forum, the long civic square framed by the Temple of Jupiter with Vesuvius on the horizon, surrounded by the Basilica, the Temple of Apollo and the market hall.
From the Forum the paved streets, with their raised pavements and stepping stones, lead past bakeries with millstones, fast-food counters, fountains and houses decorated with frescoes and mosaics. Plaster casts of victims in the forum granary bring the tragedy close. The map helps you choose a route that suits your energy, since Pompeii is huge and impossible to see completely in a single visit.
Pompeii's amphitheatre and Via dell'Abbondanza
In the eastern part of the city stands the amphitheatre, built around 70 BC and the oldest surviving stone amphitheatre of the Roman world. It held most of the town's population for games and shows, and the large exercise ground with its swimming pool sits next to it. Walking there along Via dell'Abbondanza, the main commercial street, you pass shops, workshops and painted election slogans still visible on the walls.
This is the best area to feel daily life in Roman Pompeii, and it is usually quieter than the Forum in the afternoon. The audio guide tells the stories of the houses and workshops along the way. Keep an eye on the time and on the map, as the minibus leaves at the agreed hour to return the group to Naples at the end of the day.
Planning the day: route, timing and what to expect
This is a long but well-organised day. Departures are at 08:40 or 09:20 from a meeting point in Naples, and you are back in the city about 8.5 hours later. The order of visits puts the climb at the start, when legs and temperatures are fresh, and leaves the large site of Pompeii for the afternoon. If you are staying near the ruins, a 7.5-hour option starts and ends in Pompeii.
There is no live guide on this trip, so the audio guides are your storytellers; bring a charged phone and headphones for Herculaneum, and an ID document to collect the Pompeii audio guide. Food is not included, so carry snacks and water and use the cafes near the sites. The best time for a Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip is spring or autumn, when the heat is gentler.

How long does the day trip take?

The price is per person, with a child rate for young travellers. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is it suitable for children or reduced mobility?
It suits active children from about 6 years old. It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, because of the crater climb and the uneven ancient streets.

There is no live guide. You use audio guides at Herculaneum and Pompeii, and park volcano guides are often available at the Vesuvius crater.
What should I bring?
A passport or ID card, comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, a charged phone and headphones.

What is the best time of year for this trip?
