Full Description
The Amalfi Coast from the sea
The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of steep cliffs on the Sorrento peninsula, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Villages hang above the water, lemon terraces climb the slopes and the sea changes from turquoise to deep blue within a few metres.
Seeing it by boat is the answer to a common question: is the Amalfi Coast better by boat or by road? The coastal road is beautiful but narrow and slow in summer, while the water gives a clear view of every cove, tower and cliff-top villa. On this tour the boat tour is the centrepiece, and the commentary through your headset explains what you see.
Positano: the vertical village
Positano is the most photographed town on the coast, with pastel houses stacked up the hillside and a dome of Santa Maria Assunta glittering at the centre. From the beach the view up the slope is the classic postcard, and the lanes are lined with boutiques, ceramics and sandals.
You have free time to walk down to the pebbled beach, climb a few stairs for a different view or simply sit by the water. The best time to visit Positano for fewer crowds is early or late in the day, and the boat approach lets you see the town from its best angle before you step ashore.
Amalfi: the old maritime republic and its cathedral
Amalfi was a powerful maritime republic in the early Middle Ages and gave its name to the whole coast. The town centres on a small square beside the sea, and above it stands the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, with its striped facade, bronze doors and a cloister in Arab-Norman style.
During free time you can climb the wide steps to the cathedral, walk through the narrow lanes towards the valley of the old paper mills or simply enjoy the seafront. Amalfi is compact, so a couple of hours is enough to see the highlights, and it is an easy place to find a simple lunch.
Ravello: gardens and terraces above the coast
Ravello sits about 350 metres above the sea, and it is known for quiet gardens, music and views that reach far along the coast. Two historic villas, Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, are famous for their terraces, and the small cathedral square is a pleasant place to pause.
This stop is part of the options that include the Ravello visit, and it gives the day a calmer note after the busy harbours. The options without Ravello leave more time by the coast. Entrance fees for villas are not included, so bring some spending money if you want to go inside.
