Full Description

Mount Vesuvius and the Walk to the Crater

Mount Vesuvius, rising to about 1,280 metres above the Bay of Naples, is the only active volcano on mainland Europe and one of the most closely watched in the world. Its last eruption was in 1944, and the area around it became a national park in 1995, protecting its lava fields, pine woods and rare plants.

The bus climbs to a car park at about 1,000 metres, and from there a gravel path zigzags up to the rim of the crater in around 30 to 40 minutes. At the top, a park guide explains how the volcano works while you look into the vast crater and across the gulf. For a Vesuvius tour, wear sturdy shoes and bring a windproof layer; in strong wind or bad weather the park may close the path.

Pompeii: The Roman Town Buried in AD 79

In AD 79 an eruption of Vesuvius covered Pompeii in metres of ash and pumice, sealing a busy Roman town of around 11,000 people. Rediscovered in the 18th century and excavated ever since, the site covers about 66 hectares and was listed by UNESCO in 1997; much of it can still be walked today.

Pompeii tickets are included on every option of this tour, and a guided tour of Pompeii is the best way to understand it, since the site is large and poorly signposted. How long do you need at Pompeii? Our guided visit lasts about two hours, enough to see the main areas without rushing. The best time to visit Pompeii is spring or autumn, as there is little shade in summer.

Inside Pompeii: Forum, Baths and Streets

Your guide leads you along stone streets still marked by cart wheels, with stepping stones for pedestrians, to the Forum, the civic and religious heart of the town, framed by temples and with Vesuvius looming behind. Nearby are the Stabian Baths, the oldest public baths in Pompeii, with changing rooms, pools and heated floors.

You also see a thermopolium, a street counter where Romans bought hot food, bakeries with millstones, painted houses with frescoes and mosaics, and the plaster casts of victims that bring the tragedy close. Is Pompeii worth visiting? For most travellers it is the most powerful archaeological site in Italy, and seeing it after climbing Vesuvius makes the story complete.
