Full Description
The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)
The Path of the Gods is a high mountain trail above the Amalfi Coast, following old mule tracks that linked the hamlet of Nocelle, above Positano, with Bomerano in Agerola. It runs along a ridge roughly 500 metres above the sea, and its name reflects the almost mythical scenery, with the water and the coast stretching out far below.
It is regularly listed among the best hikes in Italy, and a Path of the Gods guided hike from Sorrento is the easiest way to do it: transport is arranged, so you do not have to work out buses to the start, and the guide chooses the route that suits the day.
Two routes: Bomerano and Nocelle
Depending on the season, weather and traffic, your guide leads one of two routes: from Nocelle and back to Nocelle, or from Bomerano and back to Bomerano. Both routes stay on the best-known parts of the trail, and each has its own character and views.
The trail runs through terraced slopes, past abandoned farmhouses and across Mediterranean scrub. You may meet shepherds with their mules and see birds of prey such as kestrels, and in spring the path is bright with orchids, heather and myrtle. In total you should expect about four hours on foot, with pauses for photographs.
Views and nature along the way
The reward of the Path of the Gods is the view: cliffs dropping to the Tyrrhenian Sea, the coastline of Positano and, on a clear day, the island of Capri and the Li Galli islands. Because the path stays high, you look down on the Amalfi Coast rather than up at it, and you feel far from the crowds of the beach towns.
Your guide explains the landscape, the terraced farming and the history of the mule tracks, and helps you pace the walk. Visitors often ask about the best time to hike the Path of the Gods: spring and autumn are most comfortable, while summer can be very hot, so an early start is helpful.
How difficult is it and what to expect
The hike is a moderate mountain walk with uneven ground and some stone steps, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed. The trail is subject to weather and conditions, so your guide may adjust the route for safety. It is not suitable for children under six or for people with back or heart problems.
Wear proper hiking shoes and bring water and rain gear. The transfers are included, with about 50 minutes of driving each way from Sorrento. The tour is available in English only, and food and drinks are not included, so bring a snack for the trail.
